1867 General Post Office Postmark on Official Wrapper, addressed to the Honourable Peter O'Reilly in Yale, BC, free franking initials at lower left and top right has a very fine strike of GENERAL POST OFFICE / BRITISH COLUMBIA / 10 JULY / 1867" in blue. This postmark is listed in Robson Lowe as #HS 10, described as having been manufactured in San Francisco at a cost of £12 and is normally found in black, but scarce in blue, and is "normally found as a backstamp on covers prepaid with adhesives". The Hon. P. O’Reilly had been appointed Gold Commissioner for the District of Columbia and Kootenay. Tears on back, still a presentable example of this scarce early British Columbia postmark. (Image)
