3265 image1900 Incoming Postal Card to Modder River, Orange Free State -+d card with Bloemfontein 8 FE 00 cds and addressed to a member of the "Veld Cornet Friis / Scandinavian Corps / c/o General Cronje / Modder River", message in English on back referring to and ordered book being shipped, some edge wear and a small scuff at bottom, Fine and unusual use to volunteers aiding the Boers. rnJens Friis (Denmark) was a Captain (veldcornet) arriving Jan 1900 with 20 volunteers to a reorganized group of Scandinavians which was to be attached to the Boer forces. General Cronje surrendered to the British at Paardeberg on 27 Feb and the Scandinavian Company, now counting only 47 men incl Cpt Friis, were marched into captivity. (Image 2) (Image1) 100-150

A De 26 British style cds, cover a bit of wear incl few light bends at bottom not affecting stamp, Fine; an unusual cover in that it has postmarks of three different occupied towns; ex-GriffithrnJust a few weeks earlier, the British suffered the first in a set of three defeats at the hands of the Boer rebels in the Battle of Stromberg during a period known as "Black Week". Only 480 sets were prepared and were introduced at Vryburg on 24 Nov 1899 and withdrawn after just five days when a new supply of Transvaal stamps arrived. 3276 imageFIRST CONTINGENT, 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment; 1899 "Palmer" Letter Sent En-route to Africa, unfranked envelope with scarce printed "Canadian Contingent / South Africa" printed cc, addressed to "Royal Victoria Hosp / Montreal" where cancelled on face by DE 8 99 cds, backstamped London NO 29 (bit of offset of this cancel on face), couple of "FREE" handstamps plus violet "J.L. Palmer, / ASST. P.M." handstamp, open at top and partially along left side, Very Fine and scarcernThe first group of Canadians sailed from Canada on 30 Oct and letter writing was one of strenuous voyage's pastimes. Mail that had accumulated by the time the ship neared Cape Verde was transferred on 16 Nov to the "Rangatira" bound for London from New Zealand. This ship had stopped to exchange news and was able to deliver the mail to London on 29 Nov where it entered the mail stream. When it reached Montreal for processing Asst PMG Palmer decided to apply the "FREE" handstamp and his own personal stamp so that postage due would not be charged. rnOnly three "Palmer" covers are believed to have survived, this one having the scarcest "Canadian Contingent" corner card. 3279 imageFIRST CONTINGENT; 1900 Cover from Soldier in Yukon Field Force to Canadian Boer War Soldier, extraordinary well-travelled cover addressed to a private stationed in Cape Town and, after some forwarding, was marked "RETURNED TO" and went back to the original sender whose original address was at Ft Selkirk but was returned to him at Dawson, multitude of dispatch, transit and arrival cancels on each side ranging from Feb through June of 1900, a bit worse for wear because of the degree of handling and distance travelled but incredibly rare with just three covers recorded from the Yukon contingent.rnYukon Field Force (1898-1900), composed of 203 officers and men drawn from all 3 branches (cavalry, artillery and infantry) of the Permanent Force of the Canadian Militia. It was sent to the Yukon, to be based at Ft Selkirk with a detachment at Dawson, as a symbol of Canadian sovereignty and as a support for the civil power in maintaining law and order in the territory during the Klondike Gold Rush. Half the force was withdrawn in Sept 1899 and the remainder, restyled the Yukon Garrison, left a year later. (Image1) 1,000-1,500

It included a five member Postal Corps led by Chief Clerk W.C. Ecclestone and among its postal supplies was the oval date stamp. Mail that had accumulated on board prior to arrival at Cape Verde was marked with the "En Route" handstamp prior to transfer the following day to a ship bound for London.
