2092 c   imageUX3, 1873 1c Brown on buff, 1875 use Flint Mich to Chicago, sender added notation "Flint Dec. 21/75." bottom left corner of card, blue Chicago "DUE 5" applied on arrival in Chicago, Very Fine; Post Office regulations stipulated that there be no writing on the front of the card other than the address and should the sender add any kind of notation, the card becomes "unmailable" and cannot be sent unless an additional 2¢ postage is added to make the letter rate; if the card reached the addressee without the extra payment then, under section 152 of the 1873 PL&R, it is charged double the letter rate (6¢); in this case since the sender already paid for the 1¢ card, the sharp-eyed Chicago clerk properly rated the card an additional 5¢ due; wonderful showpiece.
