Much more here to study, with Western Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Georgia inverted o/ps, Lithuania occupations, Estonia occupation stamps categorised by printings, etc, etc. A fascinating important holding of different material that this knowledgeable collector had put aside over many years. This collection is well worthwhile taking the time to view carefully, page for page. , ,(photo).

5826 ogO   RUSSIAN ZEMSTVOS EXCELLENT COLLECTION.

Just walked through the door, a lovely family collection of Russian locals/zemstvos on their original vintage album leaves. They are from a collection specifically printed for that purpose for locals, the issues are all one of a kind with about 150 different, virtually all mint, hardly ever exposed to light. The collector has made a good attempt to get examples from nearly every internal government or European Russia territory under the Tsar, incorporating the rural district posts. It is "A-Z", beginning with examples, Ananiev, Ardatov, Balashov, Belebei, Balozersk (x8), Bogoradsk (x13 1890s), Borovishi........ through to Tikhvin, Tiraspal imperf, Tver, Uzhum, Ustiuzhna, Ust-Sybalsk, Valdac, Veslegansk from imperf including 1871 though to perf 1880 (x11 all different), Zdansk, Zemlinsk, Zankov, Zolotamasha to name a few. Some of the printings here are exquisite, both perf and imperf, such as the imperf 1888 Lebedian swan, although there are many more here that will please the specialist. A most enjoyable collection to study and describe of these increasingly difficult to find issues, especially in collection format. A must view for any specialist in this area, dealer or collector, offered intact as received.

5830 c   RUSSIA POSTAL HISTORY FROM 1797 THROUGH TO EARLY 20TH CENTURY.

An interesting holding of over 30 items from the late 18th century through to the early 20th century pre-revolution years. Many attractive stampless covers with red wax seals, especially double-headed eagles denoting official mail. These mostly appear to be official proclamations, either printed or handwritten with the earliest being from 1797, then early 19th century with boxed cancel of Mitau on printed proclamation in German from the Kurland government in 1812, further numbered proclamations from Dorpat and Livonia of 1812 and 1813, followed by later covers with cyrillic postal markings and seals, from Western areas of the empire through the 1830s to 1860s, including Riga, Tula, Minsk, Windau, etc. Then Tsarist stamps on covers including 1869 three-color franking of 3k green and black, 5k lilac and black and 20k blue and orange on cover from Moscow to Bordeaux, tied by black cds cancels and with red and blue transit postmarks followed by 10k blue and brown x2 on cover of 1872 to London, as well as an attractive cover from France to St. Petersburg bearing Ceres 25cts blue and Napoleon 80cts rose, leading on to a registered advertising cover from Odessa 1906 to Germany franked with 4k red x5 and with large violet Zakaznoye handstamp on front. Also unusual postal stationery with and without additional stamps, a series of covers from Volbmari, some with additional 'Ruyenskoye PO' posthorns cds in blue etc. A good group that gets better on each careful inspection.

5838 ogO   imageSAUDI ARABIA - HEJAZ EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION.

Fabulous specialised collection of well over 1350 stamps, all methodically organised issue by issue, with a multitude of errors and varieties as well as scarce "regular" issues with many signatures. Highlights include 1917 2pi imperf proof in blue, first Kingdom issues of 1921 complete mint and with scarce o/ps on roulette 20 1/4pi green (#L16c) and 1/2pi red (#L17b), additional surcharges #L22 x2 used and #L23 mint signed, 1922/24 arms of sherif of Mecca types inc. multiples showing plate positions and constant varieties, tete-beche, center inverted, extra perfs, etc, also 10pi (#L50) proofs inc. frame only perf and imperf with gum and center only without gum, all signed by Sorani. There is an interesting handful of the 1924 Caliphate issues with black o/ps, inc. 5pi olive green mint block of six (#L48 var). Scott's position that gold powder was unfailingly applied to every one of these printings is debatable, particularly as they are listed in specialised catalogs. Then the extensive Jedda o/ps with serrate roulettes complete mint (#L55/L60), inverted o/ps on 1/4pi green block of four mint never hinged, signed (#L57b), blue o/ps on 1922 provisionals inc. 1/8pi orange used (#L69), blue o/p on 1pi dark blue mint signed (#L84), black o/p inverted on 1pi dark blue mint never hinged with Filatco certificate (#L92a, mark in gum from the time of printing and not affecting paper), gold o/ps complete mint and signed (#L108/L115) and many errors inc. red o/p inverted on 1/2pi red unused and used (#L100a), followed by an excellent range of the Jedda o/ps on gold Caliphate o/ps inc. blue on 2pi orange mint signed (#L120), inverted blue on 3pi olive brown used (#L121a), black o/ps complete mint (#L123/L128), inverted black o/ps complete mint, all signed (#L123a/L128a) etc, through to the later surcharges with lots of "10 pi" errors and inverts inc. on black o/ps complete used (#L142a/L148a). The King Ali issues follow inc. inverted centers on 10pi (#L168a), range of imperfs mint and used inc. blue o/p on imperf 10pi mint signed, as well as many color trials, proofs with frames or centers only, etc. Then the back of the book with strong postage dues inc. horizontal Jedda o/p on 20pa red inverted mint never hinged and accompanied by Holcombe certificate, 1925 Jedda o/ps with handstamps complete mint all signed (#LJ26/LJ34) and 8 different without handstamp used (#LJ26a/LJ33a), next handstamps complete mint or used (#LJ35/LJ39) inc. 2pi orange mint and signed, leading on to May/June 1925 numerals with imperfs inc. double printings on #LJ40/LJ43 mint pairs. This is one of the best in-depth collections of Saudi Arabia we have had the pleasure to offer with many of these issues being printed in extremely low numbers. There are items here seldom seen that are not listed anywhere, however from our quick overview of the material that is actually cataloged in Scott plus that listed in other specialised catalogs, the potential must approach six figures or more. An opportunity, offered intact as received, (photo).

5839 ogO   imageSAUDI ARABIA - NEJD OUTSTANDING COLLECTION.

An important specialised collection of hundreds of mint and used stamps, organised methodically and loaded with scarce material including much with signatures and certificates. Highlights include downwards curving handstamps, almost complete mint including both colors on both shades of the 2pi and all the colors on 3pi issues (#16/20, #16a/17a), all with signatures, Pilgrim issues complete mint (#30/34) with the key 4pi surcharge signed, followed by upwards curving handstamps including the rare 1/8pi red brown mint with blue overprint again with certificate, as well as the same issue with black overprint again, signed by Sorani (#38A/38B). Also the 1pi blue serrate roulette block of four mint never hinged (#37), signed. Then additional surcharges complete mint, mostly signed (#49/54), Medina and Jedda issues complete mint, all signed twice including Sorani (#59/68), then the same series complete used on piece accompanied by Sorani certificate inc. type II on the first two Gedda issues, leading on to Kingdom of Hejaz-Nejd with 1926 series complete mint along with a colorful group of 50 different proofs/color trials on gummed or coarse ungummed papers, never hinged. Then follow the Tughra issues complete mint (#98/114, #117/137) with many never hinged including the 1921 1/4g blue green block of 20 (#131). Another extraordinary group of proofs follows with 8 oversize issues on the 1926 types, far larger than the size of the originals, with three different designs in five colors, all on gummed paper, seldom seen. In the back of the book the postage dues are in similar detail , including the first series complete mint never hinged, shades on all three denominations, all signed, including an additional mint never hinged sheet margin pair of the 2pi, through to the "2 piastres" error on 1927 1pi slate mint (#J22a). The Pilgrimage issues are revisited at the end of the collection with a further two complete mint series (#30/34) and a third to the 4pi on 1/8pi orange, some with signatures, followed by the Medina series and Jedda x2 (#59/68), again complete mint, all accompanied by certificates. Collections of Nejd of this caliber are hardly ever seen on the market today and this is one of the best we have had the pleasure to auction, offered intact as received. , ,(photo).
