Accumulation of about 500 of the liberty cap over mountain issues of 1862/80 perf and rouletted, mostly mint yet with some good used examples as well, somewhat disorganised on stockpages and cards including quantities in glassine envelopes. Highlights include , a group of #1 2cts blues in different shades, then the #2 5cts black on yellowish paper unused (priced as such in Scott), 1869/71s with scarce original 5cts black mint, then another 5cts seen which seems to be another #2 this time with gum, requiring expertisation. In fact the majority of the stamps here are originals and ridiculously undervalued by Scott. There are also interesting cancelations for example octagonal numerals on 5cts perf, cds cancels in black and blue on rouletted types etc. This is one of the most challenging areas of Central American philately and while there has been an attempt at organising these issue by issue, much more work is needed here and will reward the specialist with knowledge.
A delightful collection on old-time album pages appearing to be complete from the first issues through to late 1920s, mostly used and in exceptional quality throughout. The imperfs for example are all attractive four margined copies, a very impressive first page, with superb copies of the 5r #1 and 50r #3 both having wide margins, the #1 especially so, as well as wonderfully clear numeral strikes, both signed (the #1 twice). The 100r lilac Maria II is also present, with four margins a little closer to the design nevertheless hardly ever encountered in such good condition, signed three times. Then the Pedro V and Luiz imperfs complete, the majority signed including a remarkable example of the scarce 5r red brown Pedro with straight hair with enormous margins all round (#5), followed by the challenging perf Luiz issues, again complete and with absolutely no faults including the 240r pale violets of 1870 and 1873, the former with signature, again very difficult to find in this condition. The later King Luiz issues are complete including the 500r black (#62) and all the 1893 "provisorio" overprints (#88/96), followed by 1894 Prince Henry the navigator (#97/109) and 1895 St. Anthony of Padua (#132/146) complete used, 1898 postage dues complete mint (#J1/J6), through to the Ceres issues of 1912/31 all present with key values mint inc. 2.40e apple green (#292), 3e pink (#293) and 20e pale turquoise (#298). At this point the collection becomes mostly complete mint with 1925 Castello-Branco (#346/376), 1926/28 independence series (#377/397, #422/452) and Ceres surcharges (#453/489) all complete mint, as well as the back of the book including non Scott listed material. A wonderful collection formed many decades ago, formed by a collector with a very discerning eye for quality, offered intact as received. , This represents a great opportunity for a perfectionist to acquire a tip-top collection complete to 1930 with classics that are seldom seen so superb. , ,(photo) (Image 1) (Image 2)
An old time collection housed in a delightful Scott ,classic album. If condition isn&rsquo,t such a problem with the 19th century, then this undoubtedly very high cataloguing collection will hold much interest. For example there is Scott #3 the 50r deep yellow green of 1853, as well as the 1855 #5 to #8 with #5 cut to shape. However there are further more generous margined stamps on the 1866 and 1862 through to 25reis, followed by the 1866/67 King Luiz issues with values including 120 reis, the 1867/70 perf issues #27 through to #33 and virtual completion of 1870/84 issues to 300 reis etc. There is a reasonably well filled collection thereafter with several 100s stamps, all one of a kind, including better series of the 20th century mint and used culminating with back of the book with parcel post, newspapers, postage dues, civilian rifle club etc. Please note that the 20th century is in far better condition that the 19th, virtually all excellent.
Several 100s of stamps, virtually all one of a kind used, starting off with the imperfs of 1855 with 4 generous margins on the 50 reis green, followed by a range of the 1856/57 imperfs, , , then the 1862 definitives to 100 reis with large margins on the 10 reis yellow. Next are further imperfs on the King Luiz issues, possibly official reprints as they are unused, followed by a range of perforated Luiz definitives to 300 reis and then 1000 reis, i.e. 1875 through 1884 with plenty of good stamps to investigate here. Also seen plenty of other good material from 1880 with various other defins, leading through to 20th century which is well filled including back of the book. Collection is completely uncatalogued and housed on Schaubek album leaves, Unfortunately the vendor jettisoned the binder to save weight! A very good collectors collection with huge potential, needs a solid viewing page for page.
A delightful collection of Portuguese Europe virtually complete on Scott specialty pages formed several decades ago. The Azores includes the #1 5r black imperf used, then a very attractive group of higher denomination imperfs all with substantial margins all round, with 20r bister unused signed, 50r green mint signed three times, 80r orange and 100r lilac used (#3/6). Then 1868/70 perf issues inc. 50r green (#11) and 120r blue used (#14), 1871/75s to 120r blue mint (#29) plus the perf 14 100r lilac unused signed (#28e), followed by 1875/80 King Luiz inc. perf 12 1/2 10r blue green (#31) and 50r pale blue mint (#34b), perf 13 1/2 ,150r blue superb used (#35) and 150r yellow and 300r lilac mint (#36/37), through to the small "Acores" o/ps including on embossed 20r carmine mint (#49b) and 1000r black mint (#60) as well as new Luiz types to the 500r red violet mint (#64). Further highlights in the Azores are the 1894 Prince Henry the navigator series complete mixed mint and used (#65/77), 1895 St. Anthony of Padua series complete mint (#78/92) with the 1000r top value signed Diena, then all the following regular issues complete inc. Ceres types with mint high values 2.40e apple green, 3e lilac pink 10e pink and 20e pale turquoise (#232/233, 236/237), as well as all the Scott listed back of the book complete mint. The Madeira is equally impressive with no empty spaces, the 1868 imperfs all with signatures inc. 20r bister unused, 50r green mint, 80r orange mint and 100r lilac unused and used (#2/5), 1868/70s inc. scarce 240r violet mint with small tone spots and signature, 1871/80s inc. 1874 240r violet and 1879 150r yellow used (#30/31) the latter again signed, etc, etc. A great old-time collection with scarce stamps in a quality far better than normally encountered, completely uncatalogued and clearly will add up very quickly, deserving a careful viewing to be really appreciated. , ,(photo) (Image 1)
Magnificent range of 19th century material from an old-time hoard recently unearthed, representing the best and most interesting items accumulated over the lifetime of a dedicated philatelist many decades ago. There are approximately 200 stamps here, over a third of which are bulls and Moldavia-Walachia classics and the rest Cuza and Carol imperfs. Highlights include 1859 80pa red mint signed (#10) as well as a few genuine used 40pa blues on bluish paper, 1859 5pa blacks unused and mint requiring expertisation, followed by an excellent showing of eagle types inc. 6pa red on laid paper mint (#13) large margins so corner fault clear of the design, 3pa yellow superb used (#15) and extremely scarce 6pa carmine mint showing full double impression (#16), as well as multiples including mint blocks of 15 of the 1864 typographed 6pa and 30pa, etc. Then the Prince Cuza issues of 1865 inc. further mint blocks with two blocks of six of the 2pa orange and a used example (#22), leading on to impressive Prince Carols inc. 1866/67 5pa black on indigo mint (#30a), 2p and 20p thick papers, 1868/70s complete used inc. both 18b shades and many mint inc. 18b rose shade signed and scarlet unused (#36/36a), as well as highly unusual non Scott listed perforated 3b violet (#34 var.), then 1869s complete used and with the rare 15b vermilion on vertically laid paper which was never issued (see note in Scott, value $1,250), however this example somehow with a cds postmark and deserving further investigation as it could be unique, if not certainly rare. Then follows the 1871/72s full beard types follow complete used including the 15b red tied on piece by superb strike of Braila cds and the 50b red and blue with blue straight line postmark. Also a few better perf issues inc. #58 mint, #59 unused signed, #65 mint, #120a cliche error in block of four with normal, 1891 3b lilac bisect tied on large piece, 1920 journalists' conference unusual private o/ps combined on part cover front, etc. There will be even more discoveries to be made here when you spend time on this lot, the imperfs loaded with superb examples with wonderful postmarks, the vast majority if not all with four margins, a spectacular old-time hoard with enormous potential. ,(photo) (Image 1) (Image 2)
