5747 ogO   JAPAN ESOTERIC COLLECTION.

One-volume accumulation of 1000s of stamps, somewhat disorganised, virtually all used with much 19th century including non-Scott listed back of the book. The holding begins from imperf onwards, then a handful of 1870s chrysanthemums, followed by enormous possibilities on the 1880s and 1890s chrysanthemums which are here by the hundreds, as well as the military commems, etc, plus postal stationery cut squares, revenues, Imperial Japanese telegraphs, etc. There is also some useful material in the 20th century including the 1929 airpost miniature sheet mint, a presentable mint example of sound appearance from the front, put through a sweatbox in our opinion, causing some gum discoloration on reverse. Considerable potential here, valued conservatively.

Some highlights (mint unless otherwise stated) are as follows: the first series of 1892 includes imperf pairs complete to $5, first "f" of "official" missing on perf 4cts and complete sheets including on the $1 blue and black and $5 red and black (sheets of 10). Then an excellent page of varieties on the 1903 script "OS" o/p on 3cts green inc. double perfs block of four, imperf block of four with o/ps omitted and scarce perf 12 examples unused and used on piece, not listed in Scott, as well as a proof block of four with o/p only, leading on to the 1904 surcharges including both issues showing scarce variety with new value printed on both sides, listed but unpriced in Scott for the 2cts on 30cts and not listed at all for the 1ct on 5cts on 6cts. A brief overview of the highlights in the second and third albums includes the 1906 blue OS o/p only proof single and block of four ex-Lagerlof, 1909/12s with 2cts president Barclay x10 on commercial registered cover to New York, as well as imperf inverted center, center omitted single and se-tenant in block of four with normal, plus a highly unusual and rare corner block of four with centers in black. 5755 ogO   LIBERIA VALUABLE HOLDING.

Outstanding range of material including errors from a premium collection ,of Liberia ,offered and sold by us several years ago. This safety deposit section, as well as work in progress on his desk, was placed to one side by the family some years ago, now offered intact as received from , the allegory issues onwards.  ,It is extraordinary in its scope, including much 19th and early 20th century imperf pairs, missing centers, imperfs between, color proofs, better airmails, officials, color trial printings in their various stages from primitives onwards, se-tenant strips of errors, a very good range of 19th century errors including registered from 19th century onwards and much more, even the later 20th century has good items such as the mint United Nations International Children&rsquo,s Emergency Fund miniature sheet of 4, both large and small, not easy to find the pair today. There are a good number of items with less than 100 known. This interesting range will challenge the Liberian specialist with its diversity of material, making this almost irreplaceable, although still needing much work. A thoroughly recommended viewing with much here to discover and categorise.

5760 c   MANCHURIA RUSSO-JAPANESE WAR OF 1904/1905 SPECIALIZED POSTAL HISTORY COLLECTION.

A very colorful and fascinating holding of over thirty covers and cards from the 1904/05 Russo-Japan war on Manchurian soil between the invading Japanese forces and the occupying Russians, with a diverse range of postal history, covers, stationery and postcards including patriotic from both sides. The material is organized here, campaign by campaign with some of the most impressive items being the Japanese prepaid lettersheets with all over illustrations on the inside in color, including a deep-blue denomination large pictorial design opening out to show photos of "west gate of Liao Yang during occupation" and "cavalry officer's patrol near an-shan-chan" set again in all-over color decoration. Then another lettersheet, this time in green sent in the care of the Karafuto guard unit in November 1904 with inner illustration of the production-line of a silk factory accompanied by beautiful butterfly and flower design surrounding, as well as another very unusual sheet with possible propaganda use as Russian orthodox onion-dome churches can be seen in the landscape illustration. Further propaganda is evident in a postcard with color caricature all-over illustration of the "ghost of Makaroff", the Russian admiral killed by a Japanese mine outside Port Arthur, here depicted with a mournful expression and holding a ship, sent from In-kow, Manchuria to England in October 1904 with Yokohama stransit cds. Other excellent Japanese postcards include an item sent from the front with photograph captioned "our infantry firing at the enemy from an entrenchment at Liaoyang" surrounded with yet another color illustration, another color postcard with views of field post offices, plus a series of used postcards with painted illustrations of the soldiers' day-to-day life. There are also plain covers from the Japanese Expeditionary Forces with "chops" postmarks in red, similarly on postal stationery with translated soldier's account of operations, also red star military stationery from North China campaign battalion with censor chops, followed by anchor and flag types, blue on pink stationery card with cds this time of the 4th Army and manuscript "military post", etc, etc. Material from the Russian forces equally interesting, including a picture postcard sent from Kharin 16-08-05 to Kuopio Finland 21-09-05 with excellent strike of officer's fieldpost handstamp with negative double-headed eagle design, a postcard of a bridge on the Siberian railway, with various postmarks inc. 16th artillery brigade clear strike in purple and TPO cancel dated 19-03-05 and much more. A wonderful group of covers with detailed write-up that probably should be in a museum, it is that good. Some of these covers are worth many hundreds of dollars each or more, certainly some are irreplaceable. Highly recommended, offered intact as received.

MEMEL
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
5762 ogO   imageMEMEL SPECIALIZED COLLECTION.A richly specialised collection formed by one collector many decades ago. There are several 1000s of mostly mint stamps written-up in extensive detail on many hundreds of album pages, housed in 6 substantial loose-leaf albums deaccessioned from the Cardinal Spellman museum in 2001. The collection concentrates with considerable scholarship on the settings of the overprints on Germanias, then the French sowers and Mersons types with an in-depth survey of the positions of the constant plate varieties, field positions, as well as Hahn numbers, printing date inscriptions, etc. Beginning with the first album, with the Germanias, distinguished by flat-plate and rotary printings, then by the width and ink of the overprints. Highlights include the 50pf sheet corner pair on orange white paper (#7y, &euro,440 as singles), many distinct shades including on the 2.50 mark with the scarce rose lilac signed (Mi#13e, &euro,700), followed by lots of Hahn numbers with the colored numbers, black numbers and a range with both colored and black numbers, particularly remarkable the 20pf ultra side marginal blocks of six with Hahn numbers unlisted in Michel and a scarce plate number 711 pair of the 2mk blue from the lower middle of the sheet, with H 4078.20, listed but unpriced in Michel and certainly rare. The French sowers and Mersons that follow are methodically presented sheet position by sheet position, with the field numbers stated. There are not only the Michel listed "plattenfehler" but also excellent varieties not listed in Michel, especially the dramatically shifted o/ps and distinctive flaws, for an example the extra vertical bars in red color of o/p. The 1921 first issues have lots of lower marginal blocks showing complete printing dates, many better seen including the 40pf on 20cts red brown corner block of 8 (#22a Bru), 60pf on 40cts yellowish paper block of 4 (#24x Bru), 1mk on 50cts on yellowish paper (#26xa Bru), 1.25 on 60pf (#27x Bru), many on the 2mk on 1fr inc. on complete sheet of 25 of the good GC paper variety (#28x Bru), etc. The constant sheet varieties include 1mk on 50cts on white paper with major flaw on "M" of 'Memel' x2 (#26y I), 3m on 2m with 3.2mm between "3" and "mark" (#29 I) lower margin example, as well as 2.8mm mint never hinged in lower margin pair (#29 II), the 3mk on 5fr with 2.8mm between "3" and "mark" used (#30 I), etc, etc. Then the surcharges with capital first letter of value with printing date blocks on all denominations including the scarce 60pf on 40pf plate II in corner block of 4 (#36a Bru), as well as on all three different plates of the 3m on 60pf, leading on to airposts inc. 2mk on 1fr with wide space between "2" and "mark" mint never hinged (#44 I), thick "4" in 4mk on 2fr (#46 I a), etc. The 1922 surcharges on sowers include the scarcest of the plattenfehler, the 40pf on 40pf Merson with circumflex over "i" of "Pfennig" mint never hinged in pair with normal (#60 II, signed), also two lower sheet marginal strips of five of the good printing of the 10pf on 10cts dark green both showing full date inscriptions never hinged (#54b Bru, &euro,600 each), two strips of five again on the 20pf on 20cts with date inscription strips never hinged (#56 Bru, &euro,360 each), etc, followed by the 1922 airposts with the 3mk on 60cts with upright "Memel" (#79, clearly demonstrated to be genuine against the small study of forgeries for comparison), right through to the 1923 additional surcharges with printing date blocks on all values inc. never hinged in lower sheet block of 10 of the "10" on 2mk on 45cts (#121 Bru), as well as  ,and three never hinged strips of the "Mark" on 50pf on 50cts gray blue (#123b Bru), then extending into the Lithuanian occupations with the surcharges on 60pf Merson again with printing date blocks for all denominations, etc. Space and time do not permit further description, this is an outline description of a small part of what is here. Truly outstanding, created by an expert philatelist who must have had access to archival stocks of these issues. , ,(photo). (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) 15,000-20,000
