Highlights include Benin only missing one stamp for completion inc. 1892s complete with used 1ct, 2cts, 30cts and 75cts, the rest mint, with lots of signatures including the 75cts and 1fr signed three times each, then the 1892 surcharges 1ct on 5cts and 40cts on 15cts mint (#16/17), the latter signed, followed by "Golfe de Benin" navigation and commerce complete mint (#20/32). Then excellent Cameroun with scarce "Corps Expeditionnaire Franco-Anglais" overprints of 1915 complete mint (#101/115, the 1fr unused) followed by the 1916 'Occupation Francaise du Cameroun' overprints, again complete mint (#116/129) all with signatures except the 15cts dull violet and olive green Leopard which is used on piece with inverted overprint. This is a wonderful series mostly free of the toning normally affecting these issues. 5664 ogO   imageFRENCH COLONIES LONG LOST "SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX" COLLECTION.A powerful holding from a wealthy francophile collector. Present is only the best material as cherry-picked from collections bought from other collectors as well as numerous auctions over many years, including some better individual items often on original lot cards. This is a very well filled, substantial and important volume with a few 1000s of stamps sometimes crammed together on the page, making viewing quite a challenge, accompanied by some valuable postal history. If you look closely you will find many shades, unusual postmarks, numbered interpanneau pairs, varieties back of the book, all nonchalantly presented, though for the most part having some alphabetical organisation for the countries. Among the highlights seen on first inspection, (mint unless otherwise stated), there are Post Offices in China inc. Tchongking 50cts key value (#12), Castellorizo "B.N.F." 15cts and 1pi on 25cts rights of man and 2pi on 50cts with "s" instead of "z", all signed (#6, #8, #11c), "O.N.F." to 2pi on 50cts (#14/25), occupation of Cilicia handstamps inverted and double, followed by Diego Suarez 1892 5cts on 10cts normal and inverted o/ps, the latter in extremely attractive quality and signed (#11, 11a), plus the 30cts postage due (#J11). Then French Equatorial Africa double "Libre" 40cts, 45cts, 50cts, 55cts and 70cts never hinged (#94a/100a, 103a), French Oceania with an excellent example of the key 1900 50cts brown on azure (#18), French Polynesia series of epreuves de luxe all signed by the artist/engraver, as well as many good complete series, also Guadeloupe with 1892 75cts mint never hinged gutter pair numbered "3" (#43), Ivory Coast parcel posts inc. #Q5 mint never hinged, extensive Madagascar inc. 1891 15cts (#10), 1895 75cts (#20), 1896 navigation and commerce proofs complete series of 13 on card, onto sunken die proofs, etc. Then New Caledonia 1881 25cts on 35cts used (#4), 1892 1fr imperf (#19), New Hebrides inc. o/p on 1/- KEVII used (#6), through to 1938 French issue beach scene series complete mint and used to 10fr (#55/66) and British issue specimen perfins to 50cts, followed by Obock with arched o/p on 75cts signed (#10), navigation and commerce complete (#32/44), 1894 25cts right-hand bisect used as 5cts (#53a) tied on "journal franco-ethiopien Djibouti" newspaper wrapper addressed to Paris with "Via Aden" postmark - a very eye-appealing and scarce commercial usage. The Reunion also has interesting postal history with 10cts Ceres general Colonies #9 four margined on cover signed Roumet with 40cts orange sent to France, as well as an extraordinary franking of block of 12 2cts + 1ct paying 1907 rate to Argentina, through to France Libre and first flight covers, etc. The Somali Coast has the #1 and #2 both signed as well as scarce 5fr carmine also signed (#5), then strong Tahiti including highly unusual 1884 5cts and 10cts surcharges printed on "le messager de Tahiti" newspaper wrappers sent to the same addressee with Papeete cds 5th July '84 (5cts) and 5th August '84 (10cts), through to the 1903 surcharges with both types of the 10cts on 15cts and the 10cts on 40cts, each on cover. Also better Tunisia inc. 5fr lilac (#26) interpanneau pair numbered "9" and Zanzibar with further numbered interpanneau pairs and many surcharges on navigation and commerce inc. 7 1/2 annas on 75cts. Also seen, groups of cancels again on general Colonies issues, especially French Guiana with 10cts bister eagles "pair, one sideways" on piece and another in strip of three on attractive large piece (#3a), 10cts Ceres four margined pair with blue lozenge cancel (#9), 30cts Ceres block of four with Cayenne cds cancels (#22), etc. Similarly Madagascar inc. superb army post cds strikes on 25cts strip of 5 and 40cts pair (#57), Tamatave cds on 1fr strip of three on piece (#59), etc, as well as interesting bisects of on piece, followed by Mayotte inc. cancels on 80cts eagle signed (#6), 80cts Napoleon with four wide margins (#15) and blue cds on imperf 75cts peace and commerce (#28), Nossi-Be on 20cts eagle pair (#4) and 80cts Ceres imperfs x3 (#23, close margins), etc, etc. This is only a very small part of the many highlights with much more to discover, each inspection disclosing more finds. A very exciting holding with many scarce stamps and good postal history items. A highly recommended viewing. , ,(photo)

Then Guadeloupe with three stampless covers to the same addressee with superb Pointe-a-Pitre cds and red colonies postmarks, then 30cts Napoleon with 40cts Ceres imperfs tied on cover from Pointe-a-Pitre by lozenge cancel and blue colonies cds, Senegal with beautiful St. Loius cds and large "30" handstamp both in blue on stampless cover, followed by 10cts and 40cts eagles tied on cover with SNG lozenges with blue cds and PD box cancel, etc. The Martinique also is very impressive, with ten classic covers inc. multiple and combination frankings of the eagles, then four margined 30cts Napoleon with 40cts Ceres, very attractive signed cover with 1872/77 10cts and 30cts Ceres type II issues tied with superb MQE lozenge, leading on to a range of peace and commerce imperf frankings. Similarly the Reunion with various general colonies 50cts rates inc. Ceres 20cts pair (#11) + 10cts bister (#9), then again to same addressee the 15cts (#10) single and pair + 5cts (#19) and three covers with 25cts blue pairs (#12). Also interesting French India, Benin/Dahomey, Congo 50cts red and blue 1896 registered single franking on cover to England, Madagascar 50cts bisect tied by "affranchissement exceptionel" postmark, Nossi-Be 25cts commerce tied by blue 1888 cds and with red paquebot cancel, through to ranges of Levant and France used from Algeria, etc, etc, there is so much more here to investigate. This is a collector&rsquo,s accumulation that should be viewed page for page, line for line, stamp for stamp as virtually everything is here for a reason and this description is at best an outline, deserving careful viewing with the Yvert and other specialised catalogues. , ,(photo)
