U.S. COVERS AND POSTAL HISTORY
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
5314 c   SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR CORRESPONDENCE AND MILITARY POSTAL HISTORY.An original hoard of about 50 items of postal history from two related correspondences during the Spanish-American War 1898/99, as well as collateral kept at the time. Almost all the letters are from a soldier to his girlfriend and his sister who were friends in the town of Toledo, Iowa, with some to his father and one or two others, including a soldier friend of Will Davidson, the main correspondent, to his sister Bess Davidson. The contents are fascinating, reporting on the celebrations of the Cubans and also the gratitude of the Spanish soldiers, giving the American soldiers buttons from their clothes because they will now get to go home to Spain! Other letters describe the sailing into Havana harbor past the wreck of the "Maine" and the subsequent blowing-up of the ship, with another letter written entirely on banana leaves! The letters from Cuba have military post cancels on US stamps or Cuba surcharges with some also from camps on the mainland, many of these have been roughly opened at the side end of the envelope. A wonderful and evocative group of primary source material from the Spanish American War, an important treasure trove well worth considerable further research. 2,000-3,000
