5109 c   imageUX1, Kaunakakai Molokai,Feb 7 ,1891 Purple postmark (MH 282.011) on ,one-cent Queen Liliuokalani postal card of 1882, sent by a Catholic brother at the Kalaupapa leper settlement on Molokai, carried by mule from the isolated settlement, to Kaunakakai where it was disinfected, addressed ,Catholic Mission Honolulu, it arrived on 10 Feb where it was fumigated a second time at the main Honolulu post office, using sulphur dioxide. All mail from the leper settlement was disinfected first at Kaunakakai and then at Honolulu. This postal card is one of the earliest examples from from the leper settlement. The message on the reverse, in French, advises that the church pamphlets have not arrived, and requests the Rev. Clement to send any leftovers he may have, including one in Latin. They are to be sent to the Rev. Conrardy at Kalawao (main village of the leper settlement before most of the lepers were moved to the Kalaupapa village in 1890). Very rare and Very Fine. Inscribed &ldquo,JD./Kalawao&rdquo, in upper left corner. Envelope is stained from fumigation and upper right and lower left corners were cut off. The postage stamp was marked with a blue &ldquo,X&rdquo, (at Kalawao, as the post office closed in 1916), and postmarked in transit at the Honolulu post office, where it was fumigated a second time. Censored at Honolulu (Examiner number 2774). All mail leaving the settlement was disinfected there and again at the Honolulu post office, although very few examples exist today. Practically all mail was sent by the Sisters maintaining the facility and the letters were probably destroyed after receipt, addressed Clyde MO, ,envelope corners were clipped off and they were placed in electric ovens and baked to sterilize the contents. 5121 c   imageSantiago Chile, ,Apr 12 ,1887 ,postmark ties 5c stamp to 5c uprated stationery envelope of 1878 (158 : 94mm), paying the double weight internal use. This envelope was mailed during the cholera epidemic of 1886-1887 which ravaged Chile, killing over 24,000 out of the 57,000 persons who contracted the disease. This cover was disinfected before leaving Santiago. On the reverse is the very desirable "Butterfly" shaped marking: DESINFECTADA / POR CALOR, indicating it was "Disinfected by Heat". Letters were placed in an autoclave sterilizer to disinfect the contents, scarce and Very Fine. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , (Image 1) 400-500
