A magnificent lifetime's collection of the postmarks of Slovenia, housed in 16 thick volumes, all written up with hundreds of covers and thousands of stamps, as well as many evocative old postcards. The postmarks are chronologically organized by town and with the towns running alphabetically from &lsquo,A to Z&rsquo,, starting with Adlesici, Ajdovscina, Anhovo, Deskle-Anhovo, Ankaran, Apace, Artice, Avce, etc. through to Zidani Most, Ziri, Zirovnica, Zrece and Zuzemberk. Having gone through so many changes, Slovenia is one of the most fascinating areas for postal history in Europe and this collection goes into detail on the interesting transitional periods from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Yugoslavia, through to the Italian and German occupations and a little beyond 1945, all methodically displayed and organized page for page. We note classic Austria imperfs including with thimble and straight-line cancels, imperf Mercury issues inc. pair with enormous margins all round canceled Sauerbrunn (Rogaska Slatina) 1879, also railway posts, military field post, as well as particular strength in the 'posthilfsstelle' usages of the semi-private post aid agencies, including covers showing boxed straight line cancels with asterisks framing the town names. In the immediate post-WWI transition period, there are 'breaking chains' issues in combination with Austrian stamps inc. express multiples (eg. Jurschinzen/Jursinci) and some crowded cancels due to the inclusion of both forms of name, for example. 1917 'St. Thomas bei Friedau - Sv. Tomaz pri Ormozu' in beautiful strikes on 15h red strip of three on piece. The WWII occupations include many Italian o/ps, with better areas such as 'R. Commissariato Civile Territori Sloveni occupati Lubiana' on unusual money order postal stationery with green coat of arms, also noted violet 'Gurkfeld' handstamp and so called 'silent cancel' cds on Hindenburg 12pf on cover to Graz and much more specialised. Then the 1945 liberation with 9.5.1945 star over mountains o/ps used on piece from various towns, and similar motif seen in handstamp on interesting official mail, etc. As an example one of the most extensive towns is Laibach/Ljubljana, here with unusual covers and stationery items in the 19th century inc. registered 2kr brown card with additional 10kr blue and notary's double headed eagle cachet in purple, then Austria/Yugoslavia combinations canceled with wonderful machine cds postmarks with 12 concentric rings, followed by company mail with freepost cancels, etc. This hardly scrapes the surface of this exciting collection representing the culmination of a lifetimes work. It would be very difficult if not impossible to replace today. A great opportunity for the specialist, hardly ever available with such an extensive range and specialization. (Image)
10 well filled albums of modern Yugoslavia from the 1960s onwards, virtually complete through to the , mid 1980s, all in sheetlets of 9 or smaller format , (when it comes to Tito). , There are the Marshall&rsquo,s sheetlets of 8 and the central logo instead of the ,9th ,stamps - some of these sheets are considerably better and this is a recommended viewing to any knowledgeable Yugoslavia collector or dealer to study, page for page. Needless to say virtually every theme/topic is represented here, as well as booklets being seen and of course everything is in complete series. There are also miniature sheets present here, (again mostly Tito)  ,but the overwhelming majority are sheetlets with a gigantic new issue cost. A very attractive collectors collection, highly recommended.
A very important specialised collection of the Italian occupation issues for Lubiana, April to June 1941, not only stamps but also exceptional postal history, with scarce and fascinating material on every album page. The collection begins with extensive Commissariato Civile 'Co. Ci.' overprints with the complete series with the key 15d brown mint never hinged, signed twice (Sassone #14, cat. &euro,875), then the complete series inc. handstamp o/p 3d and diagonal o/p 4d used on cover (cat. &euro,1,000) with signatures, leading on to an excellent group of proofs with Co.Ci. o/ps inc. series of 14 on the small King Peter II types to 30d with a 15d brown mint never hinged and signed (indistinguishable by us from the scarce issued stamp #14). The proofs continue with unusual partial double prints on the issued 25p black with postmarks on the reverse and unissued o/ps on three different airpost stamps. Then a fascinating section on the handstamp Co.Ci. o/ps with 18 different kinds mint, all signed twice, plus a wonderful local advertising cover with illustrated cachet for an engraving company franked with handstamped 1d green alongside machine overprinted 50p orange. Other varieties on these issues are the double errors on 25p, 1d and 3d (#1aa, #3aa, #6aa), high o/p and broken 'o' errors, as well as further errors on the postage dues inc. the inverted on 2d (#3a) and double on 1d (#2b). Next are the 'R. Commissariato' o/ps with 30d signed as often in this collection by Diena (#33) and the series complete used on cover, followed by broken 'R's, inverts and the double o/ps all never hinged and signed inc. 10d violet. Then more good errors on the postage dues inc. shifted o/ps on 1d pair from the top of the sheet showing 'R. Commissariato Civile' in the top margin, signed twice, inverted o/ps on 1d pair, again signed twice (#12c), as well as distinct shades in blocks of four. The surcharges of June 1941 have many further varieties including both the double Commissariato errors (#39g/40g) this time signed Bar and Tubinovic, surcharge inverted block of four mint never hinged (#39a), leading on to an impressive burst of highlights including the modified o/p of June (#34) with normal and offset on reverse examples, both mint never hinged, and a fantastic corner block of four used locally on advertising cover (cat. &euro,1,375 for three used plus single on cover). Then the scarce 'per la Provincia' o/ps all pristine mint never hinged (#42/56, cat. &euro,3,800) and the series complete used on cover (cat. &euro,2,750 off cover), the red cross surcharges with inverted on 5d lilac mint never hinged, signed (#35a), leading on to exceptional airposts with the 50d invert mint never hinged with Diena certificate (#10c, cat. &euro,1,000), the 40d green with o/p of 50d variety also mint never hinged with Tubinovic certificate (#9a, cat. &euro,1,100) and a remarkable pair of covers, both signed twice, bearing these two errors as single usages to the same addressee. Neither has a value listed in Sassone for used, let alone on cover! Last but not least is an exciting range of postal history waiting to be incorporated into the collection, with POW material for example from Cozzopoli camp with red 'delivered' strike in Italian and Croatian as well as cards to a Croatian prisoner in Germany from his wife in Lubiana, followed by a series of embossed money order forms bearing postage dues, one of which has a rare combination of handstamp o/p 50p and machine o/p 1d, signed, through to postal stationery with Italian parcel posts used from Lubiana, etc. Outstanding in every respect and an opportunity seldom available. Please study photoplates to get a flavor of what is here. (Image)
A fabulous collection housed on exhibition-style pages with over 400 stamps spanning the complicated period from the 1920s through to the end of WWII, including some extremely scarce postal history. Beginning with material from the autonomous region of Ruthenia within Czechoslovakia, there are bilingial postmarks in cyrillic and latin alphabets on an unusual range of material including a full wrapper for a Ukrainian-speaking newspaper with cancels of Chust on Czech newspaper stamps. Then follows a study of the 3k blue issue for independent Carpatho-Ukraine, with several mint examples and a few used on piece inc. one used on the 15th March 1939, the only day of independence, leading on to the Hungarian Occupation with good postal history and much interesting collateral material with photographs and write-up, through to the 1944 Nazi 'liberation' issues with scarce cancels of 14th November in red on the Hungarian issues. Then follows a very impressive study of the 'CSP' and other liberation overprints on Hungarian issues, with highlights including the 'Chust' CSP-1944 series of 22 to the 20f, mostly never hinged with the majority signed, the CSP-1944 20f and 30f issues also tied by patriotic cancels on two stationery covers of the Czech postal ministry with 'Praha' crossed out and 'Chust' substituted. Then further great postal stationery with CSP-1944 o/ps on 18f green and the rare 30f - the latter with only 244 issued, both signed by the expert Blaka. Then the cyrillic o/ps of the Red Army follow with considerable research on the constant varieties and multiples, disclosing the different settings, again with many signed, leading on to the CSR o/ps on Hitler heads for the Russian liberation with 23 different kinds, as well as a scarce cover from Slabce to Kladno with Bohemia and Moravia 60h pair with crayon marks obliterating the eyes of Hitler on both stamps! Further highlights include an extensive study of the Soviet star locals for Carpathia with imperf errors inc. 60f orange pair and 100f with value misplaced, as well as excellent postal history including issues used on overprinted Hungarian fieldpost stationery, on official document (signed Blaka), and a wonderful commercial usage of two different shades of the 60f in combination with the 60f Red Army soldier local, also signed Blaka. Then further locals with 'chain breaker' types inc. 100f blue imperf proof showing double printing and an extraordinary cover bearing 200f red and blue in combination with the 60f surcharge on 30f red Hungarian issue, registered usage of 11th June 1945 on advertising cover to Kiev, signed Blaka. There are many other locals, camp post issues and exile stamps that we don't have space here to describe, so please leave time for a thorough viewing page for page. This is an important collection of an increasingly popular area hardly ever seen on the market, highly recommended. (Photo) (Image)
