5037 ogO   MADEIRA, ONE MAN'S COLLECTION,

Wonderful collection, mostly mint, on old-fashioned Scott album pages with no empty spaces. Next are the 1868/70s complete except the 80r reprint, with the 1870 240r violet mint, though with expertisation mark that shows through slightly, mentioned for accuracy's sake only (#15), leading on to the 1871/80 series also complete with 1876 150r blue mint signed (#29), 1879 150r yellow superb used signed (#30) and the seldom seen 1874 240r violet also used (#31), etc. An excellent old-time collection, with remarkably few faults and abounding with signatures on the scarce issues. Please note this man's collection of Azores is a separate lot in this auction.

5038 ogOc   PORTUGUESE COLONIES, PRIMARILY AZORES, AN OUTSTANDING ACCUMULATION,

A substantial accumulation of 1000s of stamps on album pages and in old glassine envelopes with surprisingly good material to be found. There are interesting studies among the collections, particularly on postmarks. An example is a one-volume collection starting off with a scarce pre-philatelic cover postmarked 'ILHAS' in blue sent to the mainland, then a survey of fancy cancels and a good range of 'paquebot' markings, followed by bisects of Ponta Delgada on newspaper pieces with cancels of 24th, 25th and 26th November 1894, plus excellent collateral material with a complete list of towns and parishes in the Azores, detailed maps of the islands and literature on postmarks. Some of the better material seen on the album pages and other collections includes 1868 imperfs with four margins 20r bister used, signed (#3), 50r green used with enormous margins, 1868/70 10r, 20r, 100r and 120r unused presumed reprints nevertheless collectible, 50r green mint (#11), etc. Then 1871/75 inc. 120r blue used (#29), 1875/80 with 10r blue green (#31), 50r blue (#35) and lots of 300r violets mint and used, leading on to the 1882/85 small 'Acores' o/ps with 10r green embossed Luiz, 15r lilac brown and 20r bister each unused and used (#45, #47/48), 20r carmine mint and used and 100r lilac used x2 (#49, #54), etc. Then follows the Prince Henry the Navigator series with two complete series used (#65/77), St. Anthony of Padua inc. 300r used (#90), Vasco da Gama complete used, etc, through the 1910s with plenty of useful mint never hinged, extensive Ceres to 20e turquoise mint (minute pinhole only visible from the back), as well as lots of back of the book including parcel posts complete mint, etc. The rest of the holding forms a loose mass of material in the box, clearly chaotic, yet there are good organised pockets with further town postmarks including superb box cancels on stockcards, classic imperfs of Portugal with neat numeral cancels, covers, postcards and postal stationery, old packets of large and small 'Acores' o/ps of the 1860s through 1880s inc. imperf 50r green and 80r orange x2 used all with sidewalk margins, perf 120r blue used (#14), then in another packet no less than three of the small o/ps on 80r orange used (#53a) and this good shade comes up again several times in a crowded book of postmarks organised by the towns and villages. Clearly a challenging lot, requiring a lot of work representing material that this collector never got round to processing, as intended. This will prove extremely rewarding when gone through properly.

5044 ogO   ROMANIA, A MASSIVE DUPLICATED STOCK,  ,

Many 1000s of stamps from the imperfs onwards, mint and used, predominantly the latter, thru to&lsquo, back of the book&rsquo, and non-Scott listed and Romanian area in general including fiscals and propaganda.  ,All housed in one very substantial stockbook in chronological order &ndash, this is not a CTO stock in sheet format, rather there is hardly anything here with more than half a dozen each, with the overwhelming majorities in complete series. However in the 19th century we estimate that there are well over 1000 stamps here to study, much of this being stripped from collections and placed painstakingly in this book, the work must have taken many months. Completely uncataloged but will no doubt  ,catalog a small fortune with the distinct possibility of finds in the classics and the &lsquo, back of the book&rsquo,, ideal for a dealer.
