1880-1885 SPECIAL PRINTINGS OF THE 1879-1883 ISSUES
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1141 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, an extraordinary example of this tremendously rare stamp, being in a quality that places it among the very finest known, as this particular value is notorious for being found terribly off center and/or with faults, however the example offered here does not suffer from these maladies, possessing an outstanding overall freshness, with sumptuously rich color, considerably better centered than the majority of other known copies, as most are found centered strongly to bottom, very fine and exceedingly choice; of the mere 25 copies certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation, this copy from the Lewis collection ranks among the top four or five five in terms of its overall condition; a great rarity missing in even the most advanced collections of United States Stamps; 1948 PF and 2000 PSE certificates; ex-Lilly. (Image) $30,000.00

SOLD for $55,000.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1142 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, a wonderfully fresh and completely sound example of this truly rare special printing, featuring strikingly intense color in a deep shade, plus its impression is quite strong on bright fresh paper, attractively centered, completely free of any of the faults that plague many of the known copies, fine and choice; it is believed that only 50 to 60 copies of this value still exist; signed Klein and accompanied by a 1989 PF certificate. (Image) $16,000.00

SOLD for $11,000.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1143 og 194 image#194, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, incredibly fresh, with eye-arresting intensely rich color and a highly detailed impression on bright clean paper, centered a bit to right as are several of the known examples, completely free of any flaws which affect most surviving copies, slight naturally elongated perforation hole at bottom right, very fine.A magnificent example of one of the rarest and most difficult of all Bank Note Special Printings, with perhaps fewer than 20 still believed to exist (only fourteen of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation). Of the fourteen copies certified by the Philatelic Foundation, nearly half are found with faults, which this copy lacks. It is interesting to note that virtually every time one encounters a great collection of United States stamps, the one stamp that is missing out of all the Special Printings is the Three Cent Soft Paper Bank Note. It is typically one of the last acquisitions made to complete the series, however Mr. Lewis decided to acquire this rarity when the opportunity arouse, rather than wait and perhaps never have the chance to fill one of the most challenging spaces in the Scott National album. The Scott catalog notes that this is the only value from this special printing series valued in the grade of fine. Accompanied by 1971 and 2001 PF certificates; ex-Crocker. (Image) $55,000.00

SOLD for $52,500.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1144 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, a most attractive example of this very scarce stamp, rich vibrant color on fresh paper, centered a bit to right as most are found of this value, but clear of design, the other margins large and even, intact perforations all around, very fine for this; perhaps less than 100 copies still exist of this value; 1991 PF and 1992 PSE certificates; ex-Weisman. (Image) $6,000.00

SOLD for $3,750.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1145 og 198 image#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, an attractive and seldom seen sound example of this rarity, of which only fewer than 75 copies are thought to exist, exceptionally fresh, rich luxuriant color and a crisp impression, fully intact perforations, centered a bit to left but with the design clearing the perforations, very fine for this challenging value; 1969 and 2001 PF certificates (Image) $8,500.00

SOLD for $4,750.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1146 og 199 image#199, 15c Orange special printing, without gum as issued, an extraordinarily fresh and choice example of this immensely rare stamp, possessing a most remarkable overall brilliance, featuring especially deep and luxuriant color and a sharp impression on bright paper, exceptionally well centered (especially when compared to the existing population), very fine and handsome; approximately 30 copies are thought to exist of this rarity, with this being among the few that are found both sound and well centered; 1952 and 2001 PF certificates. (Image) $30,000.00

SOLD for $30,000.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1147 og 200 image#200, 24c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, a choice example of this very scarce value, wonderfully fresh, with strong luxuriant color and impression on bright paper, fully intact perforations, well centered, very fine; only approximately 75 copies thought to exist and not often encountered in this quality; 1973 PF certificate. (Image) $8,000.00

SOLD for $6,250.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1148 og 202 image#202, 90c Dull carmine special printing, without gum as issued, a highly desirable premium quality example of this important United States rarity, possessing outstanding centering for this, particularly when compared to other known copies, warm rich color on bright paper, intact perforations, very fine and quite choice; probably no more than 40 copies exist of this value, the majority of which are found strongly off center or have small faults, making this among the very finest available; 1953 and 2001 PF certificates. (Image) $27,500.00

SOLD for $23,000.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1149 og 205C image#205C, 5c Gray brown special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily well centered amid large margins, rich luxuriant color and a razor-sharp impression, completely free of the flaws which affect several of the known copies, fully intact and even perforations, extremely fine.A marvelous example of this incredibly rare stamp. A total of only 22 different copies have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine Five Cent Garfield Special Printings. The last example of this rarity we offered in our auctions was in our May 21, 2004 sale of Dr. Robert Hinrichs' collection. The Hinrichs copy was similarly choice to the example found here in Mr. Lewis' collection, realizing $53,250.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. Because of the extreme rarity of this stamp, very few collectors will ever have a chance to own a copy of this elusive special printing, and fewer still can acquire one in such outstanding quality. Signed E. Stern and accompanied by 1944 APS, 1991 PF and 1993 PSE certificates; ex-Neinken, "Southern Cross", Weisman, Lyons and McKinney (Image) $50,000.00

SOLD for $67,500.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1150 og 211B image#211B, 2c Pale red brown special printing, well centered, exceptionally bright and fresh, rich color, o.g., lightly hinged, choice very fine; 1990 PSE certificate. (Image) $450.00

SOLD for $475.00
Closing..Jul-15, 04:00 PM
1151 og 211D image#211D, 4c Deep blue green special printing, without gum as issued, especially intense color and a deeply etched impression, well centered, very fine. There are only 26 recorded examples of this immensely rare stamp, 25 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. The number known exactly coincides with Post Office records which indicate 26 copies of the Four Cent Special Printing were sold. Therefore, it is highly unlikely any further copies will ever be found that will be certified by the PF.A handsome example of one of the rarest of all the Special Printings. Lightly signed by both E. Stern and Ward, as well as being accompanied by 1946, 1987, 1989 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Weill Brothers, Ballman. (Image) $40,000.00
