864 O S.G. #H3a var. imageS.G. #H3a var., 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" overprint on 10pf Carmine, overprint inverted, position 23 in the setting of 50, which shows the additional variety of broken "e" in "French", stamp is very well centered, fresh on bright white paper, light portions of Lome cancels, choice very fine; since only one setting of this was printed inverted, it makes this stamp with this variety unique, making for all that more a desirable example of an already rare error; 1983 BPA and 2001 Robert Gibbs certificates (Scott #37a var.; $5,000.00+). (Image) £3,000+

865 O S.G. #H3c imageS.G. #H3c, 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" overprint on 10pf Carmine, unwatermarked, a delightful example of this outstanding rarity, a fresh and well centered example beautifully tied to piece by full "Assahun/Togo/14 1 15" c.d.s., very fine and choice; evidently a sheet of unwatermarked stamps was mixed into the stock of 10pf stamps being overprinted, it is identified by being a duller shade than the watermarked issue, and even on piece it is easily seen to have no watermark, a great rarity of this country with only five or six examples having been discovered, all of which are used; 1982 BPA certificate (Scott #37b; $5,500.00). (Image) £5,500

866 og S.G. #H10 var. imageS.G. #H10 var., 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French Occupation" overprint on 1M Carmine, Gibbs setting 1, position 2, mint single showing the variety of narrow spacing between "Anglo" and "French" making the length of that line more like setting 3 of the Sansane-Mangu issue, lovely mint single with virtually perfect centering, fresh with bright color, o.g., very lightly hinged, extremely fine; this value is a scarce stamp in its own right, with only about 100 stamps printed and most being used, but it is particularly desirable with this fascinating variety that only comes from positions 1 and 2, meaning that only about ten examples were printed showing this variety; 1945 Friedl and 2001 BPA certificates (Scott #44; $5,000.00+). 867 O S.G. #H11a imageS.G. #H11a, 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" on 2M Blue, "Occupation" double, an impressive bottom right corner sheet-margin single tied to small piece by clear "Lome/Togo/29.9.14." c.d.s., wonderfully fresh, attractively centered being a bit to the left as are all known examples of this variety, very fine and choice; one sheet was printed with the overprint misplaced to the bottom so that "Occupation" was into the perforations, the printer in an attempt to correct this, removed all the type from the setting except "Occupation" and printed it a second time above the other overprint, only fifteen of the printed twenty examples have been recorded, of these a mint bottom left corner block is in the Royal collection, only eight examples, all singles, are recorded used, this being one of the most desirable from the bottom right corner, which went undiscovered for years; signed Friedl, Calves and others, and accompanied by a 1989 Holcombe certificate (Scott #45b; listed but unpriced). (Image) £11,000

SOLD for $9,250.00

868 nh S.G. #H11b imageS.G. #H11b, 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" overprint on 2M Blue, overprint inverted, a stunning top sheet-margin single of this rare issue and very rare error, marvelously well centered, possessing pristine freshness including full original gum with the stamp being never hinged, just lightly hinged in the top selvage, extremely fine gem; this value is rare either with the overprint upright or inverted, it is believed that only about 40 stamps or two sheets were overprinted correctly, but only one sheet or twenty examples were printed inverted, the example offered here is among the finest of these and quite likely the only never hinged example in private hands; signed P.L. Pemberton and accompanied by a 2000 Brandon certificate (Scott #45a; listed but unpriced). (Image) for hinged £10,000

869 O S.G. #H16 imageS.G. #H16, 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" overprint on 10pf Carmine, narrow setting, a remarkably attractive example of this incredibly rare issue, wonderfully well centered, tied to piece by bold central "Lome/Togo/26.11.14." c.d.s., extremely fine example of this rarity; Gibbs notes that only fifteen or at most twenty examples exist, all are used being cancelled at Lome or Anecho, all purported mint copies have turned out to be forgeries; quite underpriced in the major catalogs in comparison to its rarity with other Togo occupation issues; 2000 Brandon certificate (Scott #50; $2,600.00). (Image) £2,750

(Image) £4,000

871 ng S.G. #H17b imageS.G. #H17b, 1914 "TOGO/Anglo-French/Occupation" overprint on 20pf Ultramarine, se-tenant vertical, pair wide and narrow setting, contained in gorgeous unused vertical strip of three, the bottom stamp setting 1, position 9, the top pair setting 2, positions 39/49, beautiful centering, fresh color and paper, extremely fine; this rare variety occurred when the bottom of a sheet of 100 was overprinted with the early wide setting of 50, the top portion of the sheet apparently stuck to the sheet above when it was printed receiving only a light albino impression, by the time the error was discovered they were using the second setting of the overprint, which was applied to the top half of the sheet, only six unused examples out of the possible ten se-tenant pairs are known; 1990 Holcombe certificate; ex-Bute from a block of twelve (4x3) with four examples of the error (Scott #51b; listed but unpriced). Allen and accompanied by a 1992 Holcombe certificate. (Image) £7,000

875 ogbl S.G. #61a imageS.G. #61a, 1889 "One Penny" surcharge on 2 1/2p Red brown, "One" omitted variety, bottom sheet-margin plate no. 1 block of twelve, being the bottom two full rows of the setting with complete selvage, the two error stamps being the right vertical pair, this variety occurred because of the misplacement of the overprint, and results in the other ten stamps being the variety "Penny One", also since the overprint is at an angle with the overprint moving to the right as it progresses up the sheet, the right row stamps above this block begin to show portions of the "One" making these two stamps the only true examples of this variety, stamps are uniformly very well centered, o.g, h.r. reinforcing a few separated perforations, extremely fine; a marvelous position piece of the only known examples of this error; 1966 RPS certificate; ex-Ludington (Scott #55c; unpriced).
