254 O 141 var. image#141 var., 15c Orange, with "I" grill, an extraordinarily choice used example of this enormously rare and distinctive grill type that is slightly smaller in size than the usual "G" grill found on almost all grilled National Bank Notes; until very recently it was thought that only the lower values of the series were found with this elusive grill, with the sole exception of one Fifteen Cent stamp that was certified in 1955 as an "I" grill by the Philatelic Foundation, in recent years four additional used examples (including the copy offered here) and one mint single have now been certified as genuine Fifteen Cent "I" grills, making this one of the rarest stamps in United States philately; wonderfully well centered within large margins, intensely rich color and strong impression, circle of wedges and a portion of a red transit cancel, well defined grill points, extremely fine; by far the finest quality example among the five used copies reported to date; the Scott catalog, while mentioning that most values (except the 12c, 24c and 30c) exist with "I" grills, they do not attempt to price them; in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection another used example of this with only fine centering and a small corner crease realized $4,675.00 (including premium); 2003 PF certificate specifically identifying this as an "I" grill. (Image) 6,500.00

SOLD for $7,500.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM

Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc.), with this stamp being even a bit nicer in terms of its centering and size of margins; 1988 PF certificate; ex-Cole and Chapin. (Image) 15,000.00
