1028 The fabulous Orange River Colony specialized collection that was originally the basis for the remarkable collection of this philatelically fascinating country formed by Edward M. Gilbert, in fact, when his collection was sold in the Ivy, Shreve and Mader "1992 International Sale" this very lot was offered as the final lot (lot #750) of an extensive offering, it was acquired in that auction by Victor Van Bourg who did not take anything out of the lot, rather he added a few of the items he acquired as individual lots in the same sale; the lot is once again being offered intact as part of the Estate of Mr. Van Bourg; the collection contains probably a few thousand mint and used stamps, nearly all of which are neatly and attractively mounted on handmade, well annotated pages, covering all of the issues of the colony, containing singles, multiples large and small, including a number of complete sheets, varieties abound, particularly on the many 1877-97 surcharged issues, as well as a wealth of specialized varieties, both minor and major, on the 1900 "V.R.I." issues, in addition to overprint and surcharge varieties there are shades, normal major Scott and Gibbons numbers, and concluding with an extensive cancellation collection, arranged by city, from the numerals through the c.d.s. types; there are literally dozens, if not a few hundred, items that are valued in the $25.00 to $200.00 range or more, many of which are almost never available, however they are too numerous to specifically mention here, perhaps the best indication of the value and desirability of this impressive collection is the fact that Mr. Van Bourg paid $6,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, after spirited competitive bidding, and this does not count the few better items he added to the collection; a good number of the better items are accompanied by certificates (PF, BPA or Alex Rendon); a collection that, once seen, will be immediately recognized as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the specialist in this field.
