9 c 3X3 image#3X3, Baltimore, Md, 5c Black on bluish Postmasters' Provisional, ample to huge margins showing the full frame lines on right, left and bottom and a trace of the frame line at top, cancelled by blue straightline "PAID" and tied by matching "Baltimore, Md./Nov 5" datestamp to 1846 folded letter to New York, blue "5" in circle rate handstamp and paid handstamp repeated at right, stamp with a slight internal wrinkle and some light gum toning as often, neither noted on the accompanying certificate, otherwise very fine; a desirable example of this rare postmasters' provisional of which only 26 examples are recorded on cover, many of which bear manuscript cancellations; clear 1960 PF certificate; ex-Jack Dick, Franklin Allen, Alfred Brigham, Leland Powers and B.G. 10 O 9X1a image#9X1a, New York, N.Y. 5c Black Postmaster Provisional, signed ACM, AC connected, attractive single with ample to extra-large margins all around showing a portion of the next stamp at top, cancelled with a central strike of "Savannah, Geo. /10/Jun 15" c.d.s., stamp is fresh with deep color and sharp impression, markings are clear and attractive, very fine and exceedingly rare; this New York Provisional was used out of New York but was also accepted as proper payment by the New York Postmaster on letters arriving from other cities and post offices when the letter was sent to New York, most were from cities in the northeast but one cover is known from Charleston, S.C.; this is quite likely the only known example from Savannah; 1955 Otto Bacher certificate. 16 p 1a image#1a, 5c Dark brown, single with large margins to just in at lower right, used out of Wheeling, Va. on piece with red grid cancel used as a precane\cel in the bottom left corner (not tying), additionally tied to the piece by a full strike of a blue "Wheeling/Va./Nov 6" c.d.s., a fine example of this scarce and unusual usage; Wheeling is known for canceling the 1847 Issue with a red grid in the center of each block of four, there has been speculation whether this was designed to be a cancel or a control mark applied by the postmaster for inventory control; a most desirable usage.
