"AUGUST" 1861 FIRST DESIGNS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
71 O 55 image#55, 1c Indigo "August", with black target cancel in the top left corner, but also possessing o.g. (disturbed), fresh with intense characteristic "August" color and impression, quite well centered when compared to the other existing copies (all known examples are centered slightly into the top perforations), one short perf. at bottom, another frequent occurrence on this issue, nearly very fine for this very rare stamp. It is believed that a total of 24 copies exist of the One Cent First Design or so-called "August" Issue. Of this total 22 are uncancelled including one housed in the New York Public Library collection. Only two are cancelled, both with target cancels as found here. This stamp was first certified in 1943 by the APS (before Philatelic Foundation was established) and stated that the cancel was an experimental cancel. Subsequently the Philatelic Foundation denied that it was an experimental cancellation but in its most recent opinion has declined opinion "as to what the cancellation represents." The most recent thinking is that the target cancel was used as a control marking for samples of the "Premiere Gravure" printings. Other examples are found on one 5c and one 90c First Designs with similar target cancels and a 12c is known with a manuscript "New, " which is believed to be a similar control. Regardless of the exact nature of the cancel it is not believed to be fraudulent and its precise significance seems to have been lost from historical records. A great rarity of one of the rarest "August" issues. Scott catalog value for the more common mint examples is $50,000.00. Accompanied by 1943 APS and 1992 and 2000 PF certificates. (Image) Est. $7,500-10,000
