487 c 7 image#7, 5c Blue, Archer & Daly printing, clear margins nearly all around and used in combination with United States 3c Rose (#65) on South bound prisoner-of-war and flag-of-truce cover from Johnson's Island, the 3c Rose is tied by blue circular grid cancel with matching "Sandusky/O/Aug 13" double circle c.d.s. at left, ms. "Examined/W.H.N." and endorsed along edge by the Prisoner, "Capt. B.L Farinholt, 53rd Va Regt.," the cover entered the South with ms. "Via Fortress Monroe/Per Flag of/Truce Boat", the CSA 5c Blue was affixed by the sender being tied by the Sandusky c.d.s. and was then cancelled by "Richmond/Va/Aug 25 1863" c.d.s., the underpayment of postage was ignored this being in the 10c rate period, very fine usage; this P.O.W cover bears all the characteristics one could possibly ask for with dual franking, censored, under paid and flag-of-truce usage making it a very rare and highly interesting cover; plus it is exceptionally well documented being illustrated on page 41 in Shenfeld and ex-White, Kimmel and Everett; 1976 PF certificate. (Image) $2,500.00

SOLD for $1,800.00

488 c 7, 10 image#10, 10c Blue, Frame Lines, an unusual single of this rare stamp showing all or large portions of all four frame lines which are actually dividing lines between stamps, tied to equally unusual 1863 turned cover by "Mobile/Ala/Jul 13" double-circle c.d.s. to Marion Station, Miss., cover originally used with 5c Blue vert. pair (#7) with mostly clear margins tied by well struck "Eutaw/Ala/Jun 1863 10" double circle and posted to Mobile, after two uses the back flap is now missing but otherwise in remarkably nice condition for a turned cover, very fine; the rare 10c Frame line issue is rare on any cover, but in this quality an unusual usage such as this turned cover becomes extremely rare indeed and one would be hard pressed to find another; 1976 PF certificate. (Image) Est. $4,000-5,000

SOLD for $8,000.00

489 c 8,11 image#8, 2c Brown red, vertical strip of five, just in at top and right on the top stamp, otherwise clear to large margins, tied to opened-out wallpaper cover by ms. pen strokes and also bearing black cancel ink that offset on the front of the cover, posted to Augusta, Ga with the strip paying the forwarding postage to Newton, Ga., originally posted with 10c Blue (#11) tied to the reverse by "Albany/Ga/Mar 4 1864", some ink deterioration in address and the bottom fold of cover hinge reinforced because of the fragile nature of the wallpaper, fine and extremely rare; this usage and correspondence is confirmed by a similar cover to the same addressee offered by Siegel Auction Galleries on March 16, 2006, this was a rebacked cover (not wall paper) forwarded out of the Augusta, Georgia post office that was believed at that time to be the only recorded example of a strip of five of #8 used to pay forwarding postage, but this cover confirms that this post office used strips in this manner and the similar usage from the same correspondence authenticates the usage on this cover; Scott lists but does not price a strip on a wallpaper cover, this certainly being the only known cover with a strip of #8 used for forwarding on a wallpaper cover. (Image) Est. $4,000-5,000

SOLD for $2,700.00
