UNITED STATES STAMPS continued...

CARRIERS' AND LOCALS continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
401 ng 65L1 image#65L1, Essex Letter Express, New York, N.Y., 2c Black on red glazed surface paper, unused as are all known examples of this issue, mostly large margins for this just touching at top left where there is a light corner crease, otherwise very fine for this rare local; this local has an interesting history that relates that three or four former letter carriers of Boyd's banded together, issued stamps then dissolved with the proceeds, though covers are known with uncancelled examples of this stamp there is some question as to whether these were ever placed in use; signed E. Stern and accompanied by a 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $1,250.00

SOLD for $375.00
Will close during Public Auction
402 O 69L7 image#69L7, Frazer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, 2c Black on blue, used with small ms. "X" cancel in the bottom right corner, a usual cancel for this post, mostly clear to large margins for this tightly spaced stamp, just touching the frame line on two sides, strong impression and fresh, very fine; an extremely rare local especially in sound condition; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $2,000.00

SOLD for $625.00

403 c 69L7 image#69L7, Frazer & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio, 2c Black on blue, uncancelled example of this very rare stamp with typically tight margins being just in at bottom, affixed to an embossed Valentine cover to a Mr. John L. Whitestone of Cincinnati, small unobtrusive edge tears at top of cover not mentioned on the certificate, otherwise very fine and an immensely rare genuine usage on cover; the Frazer & Co. stamps are all very rare and they have been problematic in determining genuine usages on cover because like many locals they were often left uncancelled or cancelled by small manuscript marks that did not tie the stamp to the cover, Scott often makes value distinctions in these various types of usages, however on this particular value Scott does not list it on cover of any type, also our search could find no other certified covers for #69L7, so this may be the only certified genuine usage available on cover; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) Est. $2,000-3,000

SOLD for $2,000.00
Will close during Public Auction
404 ogbl 75L1 image#75L1, Hale & Co., (6c) Light blue, mint partial sheet of twelve (3x4) being the three left rows of the sheet of 20, o.g., hinged in the selvage and h.r. on the center pair of the right row, the rest of the stamps are never hinged, mostly clear margin at right and full large sheet margins on the other three sides, each stamp has the control initials "AB" of Amos Bates, Amos Bates was the Hale's agent at New Bedford, Mass. and he placed his initials on stamps sold out of the New Bedford office, we are aware of one such cover with this control marking, light creases and wrinkles due to the fragile nature of the paper and some toning spots that are mostly in the bottom selvage, fine; large multiples of the Hales issues are actually quite rare, there is a full sheet of #75L5, the issue with address removed, but that is the only value for which any sheet is known; this multiple is not only remarkable for its size but for confirming Amos Bates initials as a control marking on this issue; a rare and important exhibition piece for the Hales & Co. collector. (Image) Est. $1,000-1,500

SOLD for $7,250.00

405 c 78L1 image#78L1, Handford's Pony Express, New York, N.Y., 2c Black on yellow glazed surface paper, uncancelled on 1846 entire folded letter to Amenia Seminary in Dutchess County, New York, red "New York/29 Jun/5cts" c.d.s. at right, stamp has three large margins, just in at bottom, also possessing an interesting printing flaw in the frame above "Cts" with some extraneous ink in that area, a fine and very scarce genuine usage on cover; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $1,250.00

SOLD for $325.00

406 O 80L1 image#80L1, Hartford, Conn. Mail Route, (5c) Black on yellow glazed surface paper, an exceptional used single with four large even margins, manuscript "Hartford" cancel reading down at left, slight normal oxidation typical of this surfaced paper, a sound and extremely fine example of this very scarce local; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $2,000.00

SOLD for $550.00

407 80L1 image#80L1, Hartford, Conn. Mail Route, (5c) Black on yellow glazed surface paper, attractive single with light red cancel and ms. "South", on handsome entire folded letter to Philadelphia with neat "Newington/Jan 29 1845" manuscript postmark at bottom left, a small town about five miles southeast of Hartford, red "Paid" handstamp at top right, stamp has mostly clear margins just touching frame lines at a few points, light file fold in cover affects the stamp not detracting from this stamp's fine appearance; this mail service apparently did not do local service in Hartford but connected Hartford and environs, in this case Newington, with other cities of the northeast United States, it operated for a short period from late 1844 until June 1845 when such inter-city mail services were made illegal; a highly desirable genuine cover of this very scarce and popular mail service being one of the few documented usages from a town outside of Hartford; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $11,000.00

SOLD for $4,500.00

408 ng 87L1 image#87L1, Hussy's Post, New York, N.Y., (1c) Blue, an exceptionally rare unused single of this extremely scarce first issue of Hussy's Post, well clear to very large margins, sharp detailed impression and bright color, certificate states "small faults" which not only are truly small but actually quite trivial, very fine; Scott does not price or even acknowledge the existence of unused stamps of this first issue which may well mean that this is the only known certified unused example; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) Est. $750-1,000

Hussey" h.s. at top right, on clean white entire lettersheet with attractive illustrated prices current of Stuart's Steam Refined Sugar dated November 16th 1857, to 256 Washington street address, very fine; this letter sheet is found with both "Free" and "Paid/G. Hussey" handstamps, the "Paid" h.s. used about half as often, but apparently indicating the same thing as these sheets were used by various companies for non-philatelic commercial circulars within New York city; 2013 PF certificate. 413 O 91L1 var. image#91L1 var., Jones City Express, Brooklyn, N.Y., 2c Black on pink glazed surface paper, double transfer at top, used with portion of American Express Co.'s red " Collect /6ΒΌ Cts/New York/Office" in box, the double transfer is a doubling of portions of the top arc inscription being displaced about 1mm down to the lower left and quite easily seen, stamp has three clear frames, outer frame just removed at top, toned spot and a couple of other small unobtrusive faults, fine; this issue is a rare local in its own right with less than ten off-cover examples known mint or used, our search has not found any that show this double transfer indicating this may be the only known copy, no mention is made of it in Lyons; 2013 PF certificate. 414 og 96L1 image#96L1, Ledger Dispatch, Brooklyn, N.Y., Rose, an impressive bottom right corner margin single, wonderfully well centered with colored rouletting at top and right and naturally imperforate in the right and bottom selvages, o.g., lightly hinged, light horiz. crease near the top, otherwise extremely fine and a select example of this issue; this local post was established by Edward Pidgeon who delivered local mail for a short while until the government closed him down, no stamps on cover have yet been found; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $300.00

SOLD for $210.00

415 c 117L1 image#117L1, Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on yellow surface colored wove paper, two singles on folded letter each with central manuscript initials "WER" but "ties" as the ms. ink tones the inside of the letter sheet, docketed from Schenectady, New York on July 23rd, 1844 to New York city (last name of address inked out), stamps with full large to extra large margins with slightly oxidized color as is often the case, both stamps have light creases and a closed 7mm tear at bottom of right stamp, still a fine and rare double rate cover; this express letter service operated between Buffalo, N.Y. and New York city via Rochester, Syracuse, Rome, Utica, Schenectady and Albany with mail stops at each of these cities, it is not clear what factor required multiple rates (probably weight) but such usages are decidedly rarer than the normal single franking; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) Est. $500-750

416 c 117L2 image#117L2, Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Black on yellow surface colored wove paper with value incomplete, lovely single with large even margins and possessing fresh yellow color, in addition there is an interesting natural paper fold that makes a nice break in the design at top right, on entire folded letter from Buffalo, N.Y to New York city with central red "Cd" cancel, an attractive and very fine genuine usage; the value "$1" removed apparently was a position within the sheet and this state of the plate with this variety was only used for the printings on surface colored yellow paper, this is reflected by the rarity of both off cover examples and on-cover usages; it is believed that less than 20 covers are known with this variety; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $4,500.00

417 c   imageRichwood's Dispatch, Richwood, Iowa, (1c) Brown on buff, nicely margined example of this unlisted local stamp, tied to newspaper wrapper to La Hoyt, Iowa by fancy geometric cancel, ms. "Via "Richwood Dispatch," very fine and scarce; this local service was founded by a young entrepreneur James C. Jay and his cousins in 1887 as Jay's Dispatch and was then changed to Richwood's Dispatch operating in 1888-89 to take mail to and from the post office in La Hoyt from Richwood, a distance of about three miles, Richwood was a rather well populated area and had no post office so the local residents were happy to have this service which saved them the trek into La Hoyt; 2013 PF certificate. 419 ngO 143L1/9 image#143L1/9, Wells, Fargo & Co., $1.00-$4.00, 10c-25c Pony Express stamps including the five dollar value ponies, plus the 10c Brown and 25c Red Virginia City issues, the $2.00 Red is used with blue c.d.s. cancel and trimmed tight to the frames, the rest are unused without gum as is normal, all with clear to large margins all around, fine-very fine; also accompanied by five forgeries. 420 ogbl 143L3 image#143L3, Wells, Fargo & Co., $1.00 Red, an impressive unused full sheet of 40 in two panes of 20 side by side showing the format for all the dollar values, without gum as apparently they were sold, mostly ample to large margins all around, just into the frame of the top left stamp and touching the stamp at top right, some faults that are mostly small including a vertical fold between the panes ending in closed tears at top and bottom not affecting any stamps, there are two spindle holes at bottom affecting the bottom corners of the bottom left and bottom right stamps, to help the appearance of the sheet an additional genuine single and horizontal pair (crease) have been lightly hinged behind so that the designs appear complete, very fine appearance; this is extremely rare as a full sheet with only four or five believed to yet exist and at least one of these is severely faulty; not only is this sheet important for its rarity but it also contains the most important plate flaw of the Pony Express stamps, position 9 of the right pane shows the rare variety of front hoof missing, this is quite striking as the front leg of horse ends with shading around it, this variety is very rare in its own right with less than a half dozen known outside of those in the sheets; an important addition to any Pony Express collection.
