1711 Queen Anne Broadside Proclamation

Introducing Standard Rates of Postage for the British Isles and Overseas Colonies
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
24   image1711 Queen Anne (1665-1714) broadside proclamation with Royal Coat of Arms at top, the notification of an act of the British Parliament for the establishment of a foreign section of the British Post Office, printed by the Assigns of Thomas Newcombe, and Henry Hills, deceas'd, Printers to the Queens most Excellent Majesty. 1711.(405 x 475 mm)It is the only example in private hands. The relevance of the act, and the important document stating it, was that it revolutionized communications not just in Great Britain but also farther afield, between the United Kingdom and British dominions and territories. This new post office act was highly important as it introduced standard rates for the calculation of postage in the British Isles, as well as setting out the rates to be charged in the colonies. With only minor changes, the principal structure of these rates remained unchanged until the great postal reforms of 1837.The proclamation states, "..That from and after the First Day of this instant June, there be One General Letter Office and Post Office Established in the City of London, from whence all Letters and Packets may be with speed and expedition sent into any Part of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, or to North America, the West Indies, or to any other of Our Dominions or Territories, or to any other Kingdom or Country beyond the Seas; at which said Office all Returns and Answers may be Received." A full transcription accompanies. This act also stated that the post office had to pay £700 each week into the Exchequer to "carry on and finish the present war." These payments continued for many decades after the death of Queen Anne. The War of Spanish Succession lasted for virtually all of Queen Anne's reign, explaining the demand for additional funds from the post office. The document is of huge historical importance, not just purely philatelic history but of British history. The document is in a very fine state of preservation, gem museum quality and should be an important acquisition for a postal museum on either side of the Atlantic ocean. (Image) Est. $20,000-25,000

Philadelphia Full Rigged Ship Illustrated Postmark on Cover From China

A New Discovery and One of Only Two Reported Examples From China
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
25 c   imageFull Rigged Ship illustrated postmark, fresh folded letter with integral address leaf datelined "Whampoa (China) April 5, 1834" to Capt. William Allen at Salem, Mass. and endorsed "pr Globe," entered the mails with red octagonal "Phila/6/Oct" datestamp and manuscript "39" rate, plus a mostly clear strike of full rigged ship postmark, very fine; a new discovery, being one of only two "full rigged ship" handstamps applied to a cover from China, the other being the example sold by us as lot 1172 in the auction of the Floyd Risvold collection on 27-29 January, 2010, which realized an impressive $62,500.00 plus the buyer's premium. The Globe was an early American merchant sailing vessel and a predecessor of the Clippers, with an average speed of not over three knots per hour. A "slow boat to China" in other words. It is said that the Globe "would beat her head three times against a billow and then fall off and sail around it." This cover arrived in Philadelphia after a long and tedious journey of almost six months and was carried on the same trip as the Risvold example. (Image) Est. $2,000-3,000
