CARRIERS' AND LOCALS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
366 c 9LB 1 image#9LB1, Williams' City Post, Cincinnati, Ohio, 2c Brown, pen cancelled example of this very rare city carrier stamp of Cincinnati, on attractive cover to West Elkton, Ohio, a town about 40 miles north of Cincinnati, Red "Cincinnati, O./Apr 16/Paid 3" c.d.s. at lower left and matching straight line "Paid " at top, stamp has slight scuffing and soiling at top, otherwise very fine and certified as a genuine usage on this cover: C.C. Williams was appointed and commissioned by the Postmaster General to run this city's carrier service, he apparently required that carrier stamps be used for the service, either this semi-official stamp or the general issue government carrier stamps, the usage in this case was for delivery to the mails with the 3c postal fee to Elkton being paid in cash as indicated by the handstamp pmk., the normal carrier fee to the post office would have been only 1c, but this stamp was used for this specific service on another outbound cover, whether the sender overpaid by 1c or they were only charged the proper carrier fee in some other way is not known; this is one of only seven or less known genuine usages, most of which were for local delivery in Cincinnati making this an especially rare and interesting usage; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $4,000.00

SOLD for $2,100.00

367 ng 1L1 image#1L1, Adams & Co.'s Express, California, 25c Black on blue, unused without gum as is almost always the case with this rare local, large margins all around with full side inscriptions including a trace of the inscription of the adjacent stamp at left, a score line in the wide margin at right outside the imprint, small thin spots at top largely in the margin, extremely fine appearance; issued in 1854 this is the earliest issued adhesive east of the Mississippi; an exceptionally elusive stamp missing from some of the most advanced local collections; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $2,750.00

SOLD for $675.00
Will close during Public Auction
368 ngbl 1L3 image#1L3, Adams & Co.'s Express, California, 25c Black on pink glazed surface cardboard, full sheet of 40 with full large selvages, small flaws at the extreme edges of the selvage including two spindle holes, otherwise very fine and an impressive sheet; this was probably not placed in use as a postage stamp but it is believed to been used in the saloons in early gold-rush California and received the nickname of the "Poker Chip" stamp. (Image) $2,000.00

SOLD for $550.00
Will close during Public Auction
369 ng 1L4 image#1L4, Adams & Co.'s Express, 25c Black with "Over/Our California/Lines Only" overprint, initials of Isaiah C. Woods, a choice unused example without gum as usual, large balanced margins all around with full side inscriptions, exceptionally fresh, extremely fine and very rare; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $750.00

SOLD for $1,350.00
Will close during Public Auction
370 ng 1L6 image#1L6, Adams & Co Express, California, 25c Black, unused without gum as always, slightly clipped corners, otherwise clear margins all around, tiny pinhole in top right "25", otherwise a fine and very presentable example of this rarity; only one pair is known and the number of singles is surely miniscule; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $3,000.00

SOLD for $650.00

371 ng 2L3 image#2L3, Adams City Express Post, New York, N.Y., 1c Black on gray, an uncancelled single on an 1850 stampless cover out of the United States through Halifax to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, both towns postmarks on the reverse, it is believed that this stamp did not originate on this cover, but the local stamp is genuine possessing full even margins all around, small edge tears at top left; all four different stamps of this local are very scarce to rare but this 1c value is listed but unpriced either unused or used, we have only found one other offered and its margins are decidedly inferior compared to this and also having small faults, thus an extremely rare local can be obtained from this cover; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) Est. $200-300

SOLD for $400.00

372 og 3L2a image#3L2a, Allen's City Dispatch, Chicago, Ill., Black, pair imperforate between, the right pair in a top sheet margin horiz. strip of three, well centered though slightly into the design at top and bottom, o.g., light h.r. on selvage and center stamp, the two end stamps are n.h., a very fine example of this variety that is listed but unpriced in Scott; 2013 PF certificate. 373 c 5L3 image#5L3, American Letter Mail Co., (5c) Blue, bright single of the blue large eagle design with central "CC" ms. cancel, on folded cover New York, stamp slightly cut in at bottom and rather strong crease along the right side that does not detract from this stamp's fine appearance, oval red "Forwarded by the/American Letter Mail/Company/56 Wall St., N.Y." handstamp at left, fine and attractive genuine usage; this service was established in 1844 by Lysander Spooner and operated a mail route between New York, Philadelphia and Boston in competition with the U.S. Post Office, this continued for only a short time before such competition was outlawed in June 1845 shortly after this letter was sent on February 21st from the docketing; only approximately a dozen genuine covers with this stamp are known; 2013 PF certificate. 374 c 11L3a image#11L3a, Berford & Co.'s Express, New York, N.Y., 10c Violet, horizontal Tete-Beche Pair, used with 10c Violet (#11L3) vertical pair on cover addressed "For Lieut. Madison Rush, U.S. Ship 'St. Lawrence' Valparaiso", the address tying the vertical pair, both pairs with large margins, docketing on back "Recd. at Valparaiso, March 21st, 1852", wonderfully fresh and very fine. There are only three tete-beche pairs of the 10c Berford & Co.'s local stamp known. The example offered here and another cover (to the same addressee) containing both the other two known pairs, so in reality only two tete-beche pairs are available. In fact, any 10c Berford & Co.'s stamp is a rarity, as there are believed to be no more than eight items in existence, with only three certified covers extant, those being the two above mentioned covers with tete-beche pairs and four cut-to-shape singles on one cover. Therefore this is not only an incredibly rare opportunity to obtain the tete-beche pair, it is also one of the very few occasions that any 10c Berford & Co.'s stamp on cover will be available. The Scott catalog specifically lists and prices this very cover at $67,500.00, which represents the realized price ($62,500.00 + 10%) in the 2003 Robert A. Siegel, Inc. auction of the "D.K." collection. This marvelous cover has graced some of the most important local and postal history collections of all time, including Worthington, Caspary, Lilly, Golden, "D.K." and Cunliffe. Accompanied by a 1999 PF certificate. (Image) $50,000.00

Blood & Co., this example is cut virtually clear of the design all around which is not often the case, affixed to a small piece of cover by a wax seal as was the usual practice, central red numeral "3" cancel, small edge tear below the "T" of "Post", apparently a slip in cutting it to shape, otherwise very fine; extremely rare being the scarcest of all the D.O. Blood issues; 2013 PF certificate. (Image) $1,500.00
