AIR POSTS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
303 c   image"Amelia Earhart" autograph on 1929 National Women's Air Derby cover along with the autographs of five other aviatrixes, three adhesives making the 5c airmail rate are tied to cover to New York by "Santa Monica/Calif./Aug 19, 1929" duplexes, violet "National Women's Air Derby/Starts Aug 18, 1929/Santa Monica, Cal.- Cleveland, Ohio" three-line cachet, very fine; this air derby, dubbed the "Powder Puff Derby," was the first major air race that brought women pilots into prominence, they were eager to receive the recognition and respect that the men held; the race took nine days to complete from Santa Monica, Cal. to Cleveland, Ohio and of the 20 women that started the race only fourteen completed it, of the six that did not complete the race Marvel Crossen died in a crash on the second day which almost resulted in the cancellation of the race as some in the press tried to contend that women were not able to fly, but this only made the women all the more determined to prove themselves and the race went on; this cover bears the autographs of the first four pilots in the standings of the heavy class of air craft: Louise Thaden, Gladys O'Donnell, Amelia Earhart and Blanch Noyes in that order, plus Phoebe Omlie and Edith Foltz of the light plane finishers; a most extraordinary documentation of this historic air race and of women in aviation; it is quite possible that this is the only know example with all of these signatures.
