WORLDWIDE STAMPS AND POSTAL HISTORY continued...

EGYPT SPECIALIZED COLLECTIONS continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1801 c   Image1901-1912 Avis de Reception, boxed "AR" group of three covers, the first being a 1901 registered stationery cover from Menouf to Cairo, the second a 1908 registered stationery cover from Ras el Khalig to Dawawin and the third a 1912 registered cover from Cairo and sent locally, all Smith Ty. AR-1.5, very fine condition overall; a seldom seen set of this scarcely used handstamp.

The "AR" stands for "Avis de Reception" or advice of receipt. A slip was attached to the cover by a piece of tape, sticker, staple or even selvage from stamps which is often still left behind (as it is on two of these here). The boxed "AR" was applied directly to the stamp which paid the rate of 5m or 1pi for the service. As many of the covers were also registered (charge being 1pi before 1906 and 5m thereafter), these covers tend to be quite colorful as multiple stamps were used to cover all the charges. (Image)
