Brun, one 20c signed A. Bolaffi, 40c signed A. Brun (Nile Post #SC1-4; $19,440.00 as blocks of four).

These Suez Canal Company stamps were in place for a period of less than 40 days and is why genuinely used examples are very scarce to come by. The need for these stamps arose when Posta Europea, who used to carry personal and administrative mail of employees between each of the Company's different offices in Alexandria, Port Said, Ismailia and Suez, was bought over by the Egyptian Government. Resuming private mail between these cities by the Company was expensive and a charge was going to be levied, paid showing the use of these stamps. The charged service was from July 1st to August 15th, 1868. The closure was due to fears of impinging on the Egyptian monopoly of postal activities and complaints from employees. (Image)
