60955 S.G. 88 image1897 Envelope from a missionary in Uganda, initialled at lower left by Reverend Martin Hall on the Sessels in Lake Victoria, sent to England and carried by runner to Mombasa and franked with 1895-96 "On Zanzibar" 2 1/2a on 1a tied by Mombasa code A JA 29 97 squared circle, with Birmingham arrival bs, small part of address erased, fine and scarce. Note: Prior to 1897, external mail from Uganda was not stamped locally. Letters were carried by runner to Mombasa where the appropriate BEA stamps were added. The early Uganda missionaries identified their mail by putting their initials in the bottom left hand corner. The costs were then debited to the sender's account.(Image 1) (Image 2)
