Manuscript "1/-" prepaid in cash. Reverse with TRINIDAD double arc cds (April 9) in black and local datestamp 'I' (same day). London cds and Greenock arrival (May 5) struck in yellow. Carried on RMSP "Trent" to Barbados and thence per "Derwent" to St. Thomas and "Magdalena" to Southampton. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 170. A fresh and very fine entire. 4002 image1847 (April 16): Lady McLeod (5 c.) blue, a used example in a resonant deep shade with huge margins all round for this stamp, cancelled by manuscript pen cross. Stamp #U28 in the census, illustrated in "Trinidad, A Philatelic History" on page 256. Absolutely faultless and superb, a wonderful example of this iconic stamp Gi = £ 12'000.rnProvenance: Collection Alfred Caspary, Harmers, New York, 14 May 1957, lot 572. "One of the finest known"; Collection Claude Cartier, SG, London, 21 April 1977, lot 131.rnNote: This is the first stamp issued to prepay postage in the British Commonwealth and, except for the printing process (evidently by lithography from an original engraving) is it exactly the same size and format as the 1840 1 d. black.rnNote: It is possible that 500, maybe 1'000 examples were printed. Reverse with 'Trinidad' double arc cds (Dec 29) and London arrival in red (19 Jan 1853) and charged '1/-' to pay. Sent on unpaid to Hamburg 'via Ostend' and struck with "3½ / GROSCHEN" in black (Van der Linden fig. 3256), with '9' schilling due in manuscript upon receipt (Jan 22).
