'carminio rosa' and 'carminio vivo' from plate II, a 'gemelli' franking of same value but different shades of two fresh and fine adhesives, good to huge margined (left stamp cut into lower margin), cancelled by boxed ANNULLATO handstamp on entire letter, endorsed "Col Vapore francese via Civitavecchia" and directed to Rome. Obverse struck with light "CIVITAVECCHIA / DALLA VIA DI MARE" handstamp in black. Reverse with Napoli despatch (Oct 6, 1860) in red, also Civitavecchia transit and ROMA arrival (Oct 8) cds's. Correctly paid double letter rate of 10 gr. for 2 sheets to the Papal border, while the receiver had to pay only the single letter rate of '8' bajocchi upon arrival. Correct franking on this large-sized letter for a total weight up to one ounce and ten trappesi, due to this heavy weight the cover shows some wrinkles, a central fold is well away from the adhesives. 'carminio rosa', both from plate II, two fresh and fine adhesives, large to huge margined, cancelled by clear ANNULLATO 'a svolazzo' strikes with "REGGIO 4 OTT. 1860" despatch cds showing inverted month slug in red alongside, on entire letter via Messina to Malta. Reverse with Napoli transit (Oct 12) cds in red and MALTA arrival (Oct 17) cds in black. Part of address torn out but skillfully replaced, nevertheless a most interesting piece of postal history, correctly franked with 15 grana for French shipmail transport until the port of disembarkation following the Franco-Bourbon postal treaty of 1854. An amazing franking which would have paid a letter weight up to seven ounces, equal to 187 grams, skillfully repaired tear at bottom right of cover, a most interesting usage which fits in an advanced collectionof Napoli or the Old Italian States in general.
