12748 Brief (cover) SG 10 (2) image1900 MAFEKING: Small-sized "KAFFIRGRAM" to Milford, England via Bulawayo franked on back by horizontal pair 6d. on 3d. lilac & black (Type 1 ovpt. on 1888 3d. of Bechuanaland) tied by "MAFEKING C.G.H./AP 4/1900" cds's, with Godalming (Milford) late May 1900 arrival cds alongside, and with Bulawayo '14 AP 00' transit datestamp on front. This small KAFFIRGRAM (72x40 mm) was carried by native runners, smuggled out of the siege of Mafeking during the BOER WAR, and finally carried by British mail to England - a kind of "smuggled" mail like the Ballon Monté covers from Paris in 1870-71. The small cover opened roughly and with inescapable traces of usage, otherwise fine. A RARE KAFFIRGRAM UNCOMMONLY FRANKED BY PAIR OF MAFEKING STAMPS = UNIQUE THUS, AND A PREMIER ITEM OF BOER WAR AND BRITISH AFRICA PHILATELY. B.P.A. certificate (1993).
