6073 Brief (cover) image1937, Sinojapanese war, battle of Tientsin and head p.o. circumstance: SYS 25 C. tied "CHEFOO 24 7 37" to cover to Johannesburg/South Africa with chinese postal repair seal tied "TIENTSIN 1 8 37". On reverse mimeographed label "This article was found torn open as / a result of the military occupation / of the Tientsin Head Post office buidling / since the 29th July. It is officially / sealed and forwarded to its / destination for delivery / (signature) / Postal Officers / Chinese P.O., Tientsin."
- The cover was in transit via Tientsin p.o. when the city was attacked July 29 by IJA 5th division and abandoned after severe fighting July 30. A highly interesting, *speaking* postal document. Exhibition item.

[This item was sent overland via Siberia and fell into German hands at a time when the USSR and Germany were not at war. Although this cover had clearly not travelled through the War Zone, it is apparent that mail between China and Burma was then being censored - probably because of the existence of the Burma Road and the sensitive nature of the military supplies then being carried by this route into China. "air", German censor tape and french arrival cds of Sept. 7 on reverse, so six weeks in transit due to the turmoil after the Battle of France. - According Proud Vol. 2 p. 864, the Kunming-Hanoi line was available again 1940.6.27-1940.9.-, but this cover ostensibly was rerouted via USSR, perhaps via Hami-Alma Ata (note: no notes or pmks. hidden german censor tape).
