RED OVERPRINT: 'P..O' (Error of Typesetting) on Rouletted 6d bright ultramarine, rouletting remarkably clear of the design on all sides, very fine GPO cds of JA8/69 clear of the variety. Superb. Underrated at RRRR: Ex Crocker (Harmer Rooke, 20.10.1938) and Colonel Harry Napier (III). Don Pearce states "No other copy traced or sold: all other references are to this stamp". We have certainly never encountered another example. It should therefore be rated RRRRRR, and as unrecorded unused. A beautiful stamp, illustrated by Ron Butler at page 125.

BLACK OVERPRINT: 'P.O.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Perf 10 2d dull red-orange, trimmed perfs at right, tied by very fine GPO cds of MY9/72 to OHMS cover without imprint, to "Bee Esq/Inspector of Police", opening tear across the flap. The stamp is rated R. Number 1 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of only two 'P.O.' covers, the other being a long cover with Rouletted 6d - Ex Ron Butler - that sold for £5290.
Thomas Walker Bee was a career public servant. Between 1866 & 1873 he was Adelaide's Inspector of the Metropolitan Foot Police.

This variety was first reported in 'The Postage Stamps of South Australia' by NR James published in 1947.
