POSTAL HISTORY: 1941 (Mar 29) commercial airmail cover to Surrey with "Aus-NZ-USA" crossed-through, scarce franking of Pictorials 1/- Ceremonial Structure/List of Post Offices and 1941 Airs 1/6d olive pair tied by Port Moresby cds, black & red/white R label, double-circle 'POST OFFICE/PORT MORESBY, PAPUA' transit b/s in violet, Townsville transit b/s where scarce ' 1/2 /NOT/OPENED BY/CENSOR/ 1 ' cachet in violet applied. A delightful wartime cover.
POSTAL HISTORY: 1942 (Dec) stampless cover endorsed "By safe hand/By Air/JStanleySmith/Major" addressed to "Lt General EF Herring/Head Quarters/New Guinea Forces" with very fine strike of the rare 'ARMY/NG 11XII42 F/SIGNALS' cds on the face, a couple of repaired opening tears & minor soiling. An exceptional Kokoda Track Campaign cover, the likes of which we have not previously seen.
Consigned by the family of Lt-General Sir Edmund Herring, later Chief Justice and Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria. Herring was an important & highly decorated commander who saw service in World War II in the Western Desert, the disastrous Greece Campaign and Papua where he had an important role in counter-attacks against the Japanese in New Guinea. He was knighted for his role in the Kokoda Trail Campaign.
Duplicated pre-decimal array with 1952-58 Pictorials mint set + 2/6d sheet of 30 & 10/- block of 4 (**), used 10/- x18 & £1 x32 including a pair, CTO 10/- & £1 x2 each and 'SPECIMEN' Overprints on 10/- x3 & £1 x5 (one **), Birds 10/- 'SPECIMEN' (**), etc, generally fine to very fine.
