RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1d bright green, rouletting on all sides, large-part o.g. Superb. Rated RRRR. Ex Rev James Mursell and Lt-Col Harry Napier. RPSofL Certificate (1965). The almost identical 'Besancon' example sold for SFr4110.
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1d bright green, rouletting on all sides, very fine Port Adelaide cds of JU15/69. Superb. Rated RRRR. [The only date recorded by Don Pearce]
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 2d bright vermilion, rouletting at left & the base and cut from the sheet well clear of the design at top & right, Port Adelaide cds of AP6/68 in the first week of issue. Rated RRRR. Superior to the 'Besancon' example - separation faults - that sold for SFr387. [Date range 6.4.1868 to 27.11.1868]
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½ 4d deep purple, cut from the sheet with some trimmed perfs - especially at left - & at lower-right where the scissor-cut just intrudes on the design, GPO cds of JY23/68. Rated RRRRR: unrecorded unused by Ron Butler.
Ron Butler, at page 111, states that only the Marine Board and Stipendiary Magistrates were allocated both rouletted & perforated 4d stamps with Red Overprints, and speculates that the issue of the perforated stamps preceded that of the rouletted. In fact, this stamp - the only date recorded by Don Pearce - is dated eight days earlier than his ERD for the rouletted stamp, of JY31/68.
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 4d dull purple, no trace of rouletting and apparently Imperforate, light Port Adelaide cds of JY31/68. Rated RRRR+. The 'Sir Humphrey' (Brian Farmer) example was rouletted at the base but was otherwise imperforate. [Date range 31.7.1868 to 27.11.1868] Offered 'as is' with respect to the lack of rouletting.
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 4d dull purple, slightly larger than the previous lot but again with no trace of rouletting and apparently Imperforate, light Port Adelaide cds of NO11/68. Rated RRRR+. Offered 'as is' with respect to the lack of rouletting.
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 6d bright ultramarine, rouletting at the top & base and cut from the sheet clear of the design at left & right, faint Port Adelaide cds. Superb. Rated R. [Date range 23.5.1868 to 23.5.1869]
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 6d bright ultramarine block of 9, rouletting on all sides & between all the units, the lower units in a distinctly paler shade, roughly separated at left into the design of the first unit, minor blemishes, very fine strikes of the Port Adelaide cds of DE9/68. Rated R+. Ex Colonel Harry Napier (III) - the front cover illustration - & John Griffiths: sold in 1992 for £660. An exceptional multiple of great rarity & appeal. Illustrated by Ron Butler at Plate IV.
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1/- bright red-brown with Double Overprint with the two impressions being virtually coincident, rouletting on all sides, tiny repair on the stop after the 'B', a few faint tonespots, large-part o.g. Rated RRRR. Ron Butler didn't comment on the doubling. We expect all known mint examples have the same characteristics, as apparent from those offered in Napier, 'Hamilton', Lord Samuel Vestey & 'Besancon']
RED OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1/- bright red-brown, rouletting at right but cut from the sheet on all sides, very light Port Adelaide cds. Rated RRR. The 'Tamiami' example sold for $204. [Date range 19.6.1868 to 19.6.1869]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1d bright green, rouletting on all sides, largely very fine Port Adelaide cds of JA31/7(3?). Rated RR: unrecorded unused. [Date range 31.1.1873 (?) to 18.9.1874]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 1d bright green with Two Stops Vertically after 'M.B.', rouletting on all sides, a couple of minor tonespots, GPO cds of SP--/74 clear of the ':'. Unlisted by Ron Butler & the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. An extraordinary error. [It is remarkable that the only such typesetting errors recorded in the entire series are this stamp & the 4d with 'I M.B.': see Lot 507]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½ 1d green, minor creases at upper-right & a more significant ironed-out horizontal crease, GPO cds of JY17/74. Unrecorded used by Ron Butler and the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. The 'Besancon' mint stamp rated RRRRRR (not RRRR as stated) - with both Horizontal & Vertical Double Perforations - sold for SFr1935.
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Rouletted 2d dull red-orange, rouletting on all sides, Port Adelaide cds of 74/FE3. Rated R. [Date range 11.3.1869 to 3.2.1875]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on De La Rue Star Wmk Rouletted 2d dull red-orange, rouletting on all sides, small fault at U/R with coincident small closed tear, Port Adelaide cds of JY23/71. Rated RRR: unrecorded unused. [Date range -.10.1870 to 26.7.1871]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on De La Rue Crown/SA Wmk Rouletted 2d dull orange with the Watermark Inverted & Reversed and horizontal marginal watermark line at the top, light Port Pirie cds. Rated R+. [Date range 11.3.1869 to 3.2.1875]
The De La Rue 2d with reversed watermark is routinely encountered. However, inverted watermarks on South Australian stamps are very scarce]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Star Wmk Perf 11½-12½ 4d dull purple, cut from the sheet well clear of the design at right, unusual 'snowing' effect in front of the Queen which may be on the plate or minor surface damage (?), large-part o.g. Unrecorded unused by Ron Butler & with another example in 'Besancon' (stained), so it should be rated RRRRR.
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'IM.B.' (Typsesetting Error with a Solid Vertical Spacer at Left) on Star Wmk Perf 11½-12½ 4d deep purple, Port Adelaide cds of JY19/69. Unlisted by Ron Butler & the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. Another extraordinary error. [It is remarkable that the only such typesetting errors recorded in the entire series are for the same user: this stamp; and the 1d with 'M.B.:' see Lot 500]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on V/Crown Wmk Perf 10 4d deep bright mauve, some trimmed perfs at top & base, Port Adelaide cds of JU18/71. Rated RRRRR: unrecorded unused. [The only date recorded by Don Pearce].
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Star Wmk Irregular Compound Perf 11½-12½x11½-12½x10 x11½-12½ 4d grey purple, a couple of short perfs, light 'PORT MACDONNELL' cds. Rated RR: unrecorded unused but there was a unused example in 'Besancon' (stained). The 'Tamiami' example sold for $162.

BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½ 6d dull blue late printing from the Worn Plate horizontal pair, Port Adelaide cds of JY10/69. Superb. Rated RRR+: unrecorded unused. A beautiful, rare & desirable multiple.
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Rouletted 6d Prussian blue, rouletting on all sides with fragments of three adjoining units, minor blemishes including below the Queen's neck, Port Adelaide cds of JY18/70. Rated RRRR: unrecorded unused. The similar 'Besancon' example - small thin - sold for SFr266. [Date range 7.12.1869 to 18.7.1870]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 10 6d Prussian blue, an unusually wide stamp apparently from the left of the sheet, Port Adelaide cds with indistinct date. Rated RRR. [Date range 20.7.1871 to -.8.1874]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Regular Compound Perf 10x11½-12½ 6d Prussian blue, Port Adelaide cds with indistinct date. Rated R: unrecorded unused. [Date range 2.7.1872 to 31.5.1874]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½xRouletted 1/- chocolate, misplaced rouletting at right and cut from the sheet to preserve the design at right & clear of the design at left, a few trimmed perfs at the base, indistinct Port Adelaide cds. Rated RR: unrecorded unused.
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½xRouletted 1/- chocolate, misplaced rouletting at right corrected with Official Re-Perforating 11½-12½ at left and right, indistinct Port Adelaide cds. Superb. Rated RR+. A remarkable official correction of which only two other examples have been recorded.
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Irregular Compound Perf 10x10x11½-12½x10 1/- red-brown on brownish tinted paper, very fine Port Adelaide cds of AU14/72. Superb. Rated RRR: unrecorded unused. [Date range 20.5.1872 to 14.8.1872]
BLACK OVERPRINT: 'M.B.' on Perf 11½-12½ 1/- red-brown on brownish tinted paper, Port Adelaide cds of indistinct date. Rated RRR. More attractive than the 'Besancon' example, that sold for SFr205. [There seem to have been two distinct periods of use: 3.9.1871 to 1.12.1871 only, and 10.1.1874 to 20.5.1874 only]
