POSTAL HISTORY: 1868 & 1873 entires to "de Rotschild freres/Paris" 1) stampless from Russia with Cyrillic St Petersburg b/s, double-boxed 'P. 35' handstamp, French-pattern 'PRUSSE/VALENCIENNES' transit in red on the face & rated "99" decimes; and 2) from Lyon with Ceres 15c bistre & 25c blue tied by superb 'LP'-in-diamond-of-dots & 'GARE DE LYON' cds alongside, 'LYON A PARIS' TPO backstamp; both with poor to fair 'PARIS/POSTE RESTANTE' arrival backstamp.

NEW CALEDONIA: 1917 (March 29) usage of Australian multi-coloured patriotic 'Allied Flags & Southern Cross' envelope, to Paris with an unusual 'Chained Anchor' metal seal on reverse and Kagu Bird 15c lilac solo tied by 'BOURAIL/NLE CALEDONIE' cds with another largely very fine strike alongside, 'NOUMEA' transit backstamp, a couple of minor blemishes. Very attractive.
