RED OVERPRINT: 'C.Sgn.' Unlisted by Ron Butler & only two other examples recorded so it should be rated RRRRR. [The 'Sir Humphrey' (Brian Farmer) example - also with misplaced roulettes - sold for $2680]
Ron Butler records the hybrid overprint only in black & only on the DLR Rouletted 2d: see Lot 120. This caused him to assert that it appeared in the 1870s & was therefore 'Type II'. However, the discovery of this Perkins Bacon stamp & the similar 6d in Lot 119 suggests that both overprint variants were probably on the same sheet, and therefore issued at the same time. The extreme rarity of these stamps might indicate that the hybrid overprint occurred on only one position in the forme. If that is correct, it might be seen as having been an error by the typesetter. This overprint on the later DLR 2d is a remarkable anomaly that, again, is probably a random typesetting error: see Lot 120.
