COMPOUND MASTER DIE ESSAY, with se-tenant CENTRAL PORTRAIT OVALS of PRINCE ALBERT & QUEEN VICTORIA printed on glazed wove paper (55x32mm), mounted on thin 'backed' manila card (55x33mm), with printed (reversed) die number 'AS' overtop Prince Albert and manuscript notation '2A' between ovals, some 'uncleared' guidelines and small paper fault top right, a wonderful and RARE PROOF with tremendous eye-appeal. MASTER DIE ESSAY, with PORTRAITS of QUEEN VICTORIA and PRINCE ALBERT in CENTRAL OVAL with clear oval surround and decorative outer oval and border and printed on India paper, Victoria with two open circles at top and blank banner at bottom (21x32mm) and Prince Albert with four open circles at corners (21x25mm), mounted on thin 'backed' manila card (51x34mm), in the form of a 'COMPOUND' proof, quite lovely and a true 'Gold Medal' worthy display item. 6	TCP		British American Bank Note Co upper left corner margin vertical pair from the TRADE SAMPLE SHEET in DARK BROWNISH RED, showing the $1 Widow Weeds Bill Stamp at top and the 2¢ Large Queen at bottom, the usual crease at bottom and tape on back (most of these were folded for storage at some point) and barest hint of the usual 'droplet' stain in left margin, still a wonderful SHOWPIECE. 7		15	15: 5¢ Beaver tied by Montreal 6 JU '68 Berri duplex to REGISTERED cover to Beauharnois, with same day receiver on back, slight cover bends, otherwise fine, and this 'use-up' usage of the earlier Provincial 5¢ stamp to pay the entire 3¢ postage plus 2¢ registration rates during the Large Queen 'Dominion of Canada' period is EXTREMELY RARE, this being one of TWO SUCH FRANKINGS KNOWN Ex - Brigham. 14		21	21: ½¢ black, fine single franking paying the ½¢ PER EACH HOUSEHOLDER RATE and tied by cork to folded four page ILLUSTRATED ADVERTISING card dated 1881 published by the Golden Fleece New Clothing House in Ingersoll, Ontario, small surface scuffs and blue ink stain at left, otherwise fine and a very RARE DISPLAY PIECE, the only one we can recall seeing. 15		21	21(4): ½¢ black STRIP OF FOUR tied by Hamilton 3 SP 1868 duplexes to a choice TWO CENT SOLDIER'S LETTER RATE cover addressed to a private in the 3rd Battl'n, 60 Rifles at Madras, INDIA, with red London 16 SP transit on front and 20 OC receiver on back, re-directed to Bangalore and received next day. In November, the soldier was declared DEAD in the largest and most cold and indifferent manuscript notation we have ever encountered, the cover then being backstamped at Bangalore and its Dead Letter Office on November 11, and returned to sender. The addressee was the third brother in the Hilder family, who saw service in several conflicts during his military career in the mid-1860s, and was, in fact, still alive at the time the cover was returned, so the family found the cover amusing and retained it. There are some minor stamp faults as the strip was applied partially over the edge, but this is certainly one of the finest and most compelling of the many SOLDIER'S LETTERS we have seen, and is a MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY ITEM for either the Military or Large Queen collector, with 2002 Greene Foundation certificate.
