Brigham Auctions Ltd. Sale - 8

Small Queen Issue 1870-1897 - April 16, 2016

What most of you have been waiting for, The Brigham Collection’s Small Queens is here. The most talked about and anticipated section of the Collection is now available. I remember receiving phone calls shortly after we reopened Brigham Auctions asking when the Small Queens were to be auctioned. Well three years later here they are.

Small Queens are very much in demand and have been for more than 75 years simply because they were in use for 27 years; their production is complex; and the papers, colours and perforations numerous. Their postal history is also highly collectible as the Small Queen Era spans the years before Canada joined the Universal Postal Union (1878) – a period of varied and complex rates – to after it did when rates were more uniform but still offer a wide range of variety.

The issue, again because of its length of time in use and its varied production problems, is a treasure trove of varieties – many of which are classics of the era and can be found in this auction.

Some of the highlights of the auction include rare and unique die proofs for all values; mail to 35 destinations; the rare 8¢ Registered Letter Stamp used in period; the largest 10¢ multiple; and a vast selection of Plate material. In addition the Widow Weeds section contains some of the most unique and rarest material of the issue including unique re-entry blocks. The Canada Bank Note Engraving and Printing (CBNE&P) section is the largest holding of the issue ever assembled. It’s variety and completeness is breath-taking. The lifelong pursuit of the Running Horse overprint on the CBNE&P’s 2¢ on Japanese paper has allowed Mr. Brigham to plate a large number of the blocks and identify others which were not available during his collecting years – one of these being in The Royal Philatelic Collection. The Widow Weeds and the CBNE&P sections were the object of their own one-frame exhibits.

The Small Queens have been exhibited longer and more often than any other segment of The Brigham Collection. Starting in 1999 they have been shown nine times competitively on a national basis and 13 times at the International level, culminating in six Large Golds and three times a candidate for the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie’s Grand Prix d’Honneur.

Now it is your turn to own items from Canada’s fascinating Small Queen Era from The Brigham Collection.
