Brigham Auctions Ltd. Sale - 6

Quebec Tercentenary and Macdonald-Cartier Issues - September 19, 2015

This catalogue differs slightly from our previous ones as it contains two of Mr. Brigham’s collecting areas rather than one.

Part VI houses the 1908 Quebec Tercentenary issue, the unissued 1914 Macdonald-Cartier Centenary series and the unissued 1914 Peace Amongst the English-Speaking People stamps – better known as the Centenary of the end of the War of 1812. The Macdonald-Cartier issue went through several of the production processes required for the issue of a stamp culminating in the laying of four plates for the 2¢ and the pulling of a sheet from each plate before the issue was cancelled because of World War I. The Centenary of the end of the War of 1812 was far less advanced before it was cancelled for the same reason. In addition, if it had come to fruition, it would have been the first joint issue between Canada and the United States, preceding the 1959 St. Lawrence Seaway stamp by some 45 years. Any of the items from this issue (Lots 202-204) would make a good collateral item for a St. Lawrence Seaway exhibit.

The 1908 Quebec Tercentenary issue is a remarkable assemblage of production material including original drawings, maquettes and essays. It also has a large number of production and die proofs and the only recorded first day cover (lot 89). Many of the items are unique and are of historical interest.

The 223 lots in Part VII: The Queen Elizabeth II Era formed a large portion of a growing collection of Mr. Brigham’s Elizabethan material (1953 to 1980). Apart from some of the varieties, none of these items have been exhibited and some have been in the collection for over 30 years. There is something for everyone in this section of the catalogue including beginner collections that would form the basis for a good start on a Karsh or Centennial definitive collection. It is also replete with rare and unique varieties for the specialized Elizabethan collector.
