image 1842-O Small Date; Small Letters Reverse XF or very nearly so. This rare issue was created at the New Orleans mint when a reverse die of 1841 was inadvertently used in 1842. The Red Book estimated mintage is noted at 203,000, but this must surely be an error given the overall scarcity of this coin. Bowers notes that most of the few surviving specimens are low-grade suggesting a release to commercial channels shortly after mintage. A higher grade specimen (though seawater etched) was recovered from the wreck of the US New York that sunk in the Gulf of Mexico in 1846. The current example shows modest wear on the thigh, lighter wear on the band of LIBERTY, and rev wear concentrated mostly on the wing tips. Emanating from an old PA estate, this is a beautiful specimen of this rare issue, and a great opportunity for the Seated Liberty enthusiast to own a really great coin. (Image)

image (6) Diff commons 1861-O // 1876 all AG to G+ originals. The half dollar was routinely used in the channels of commerce after 1875 and circulated widely. Seated halves were common in circulation thru the 1920s. They began to disappear when coin collecting (from circulation) became popular in the 1930s. But their long-time use as a medium of exchange explains why many of them (along with the Barber series) are so worn. Too bad they can't talk and tell us where they've been and how they were used.
