image 1794 Head of 1794 S-54 (R3) PCGS XF Details Environmental Damage. Great detail on a planchet that shows modest microscopic pitting under magnification. The S-54 is known for being struck on unusually thick planchets. Details grades are the norm for the early large cents, and as such, the present example is an appealing coin overall. In comparison to the Greysheet XF40 bid of $3,500, our estimate seems quite conservative. (Image)

image 1795 Lettered Edge S-75 (R3) NGC XF Details Burnished. Glossy and nicely preserved, the biggest issue being a small gouge running from Liberty's eye to her ear. Still an attarctive coin. Greysheet bid for XF40 is $3,600 for comparison. (Image)

image 1795 Plain Edge S-78 VG perhaps VG+. This variety is unique in that in the rev wreath, it has only 4 berries on the right and 3 berries on the left, while all other 1795 varieties have 9 total berries. This is a very attractive coin w/ medium brown color. (Image)

image 1797 Rev of 1797 w/ Stems S-128 (R3) PCGS VF Details Repaired. The repair is clearly a smoothing of the coin's surfaces to lessen the effect of the general porosity of the planchet. The coin is not "expertly" recolored but the quality is adequate. (Image)

image 1798 2nd Hair Style S-176 (R4) NGC VF Details - Environmental Damage. Even flat-brown color. Nice enough to have straight-graded - there was really no need to indicate the environmental damage. A nice coin especially for a scarcer variety. (Greysheet bid for VF = $1,500.) (Image)

image 1798 2nd Hair Style S-185 NGC VF20 Brown. In this variety, the 9 in the date sits low, but it must be an early die state because the cracks that are sometimes seen in the right obv field are not there. Lovely dark brown color. (Image)

image 1814 Plain 4 S-295 Good. Beautiful chocolate brown w/ even wear. Research indicates that the 1814 Plain 4 issue was actually struck in 1816 due to a dramatic increase in the demand for one-cent pieces caused by their non-issue in 1815. (No cents were coined in 1815 because a fire had destroyed the mint's rolling mills.) The 1814 Plain 4 issue was struck early in 1816 to fill the immediate need for cents because the dies with the new Matron Head design that replaced the Classic Heads would not be completed until later that year. (Matron Head cents would ultimately be issued continuously thru 1834.) (Image)
