Jan. 1" (1857) circular datestamps on buff cover to Schlitz, Germany, red London backstamp (February 2), scarce British "U.S. PKT." straightline handstamp--likely carried on the Collins Line Ericsson, departing New York January 17, 1857, arriving Liverpool February 1--red "Per England und Aachen 3/2" double-circle datestamp on back, Frankfurt double-circle datestamp on back (February 5), blue manuscript German rates, Very Fine, an attractive and unusual franking overpaying the 21¢ British Open Mail rate to Germany by American Packet, which is indicated by the British "U.S. PKT." handstamp, ex White (1937 Doane sale) and Knapp (Image)

(1857) circular datestamp on buff cover to Hirschholm, Denmark, red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid 7 Jun. 30" 7¢ credit datestamp--after the journey from San Francisco to New York via Panama, it was carried on the Cunarder Europa, departing New York July 1, 1857, arriving at Liverpool on July 11--red "AACHEN 14/7 FRANCO" (July 14) framed datestamp and red framed "Franco Preuss:/resp. Vereinsl:AusgGr" handstamp (paid only to limits of German-Austrian Postal Union), Hamburg "St.P.A. 15 Jul 57" oval and "KDOPA HAMBURG 15/7" (July 15) Royal Danish Postal Agency in Hamburg double-circle backstamps, Very Fine--the prevailing rates to Denmark in June 1857 were 27¢ Bremen Packet, 21¢ British Open Mail, 35¢ Prussian Closed Mail and 27¢ French Mail; the 30¢ franking on this cover and German transit markings indicate that this was sent to Denmark as if it were a 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate cover to Germany, as there is no evidence of postage collected from the addressee--ex Arthur White and Hackmey, with 2005 P.F. certificate (Image)

Pkt. Mar. 18" circular datestamp on back, magenta manuscript "28" credit--carried on the Cunarder Persia, departing New York March 18, 1857, and arriving Liverpool March 29 due to heavy fog, but mails unloaded via steam tug on March 28--red London circular datestamp (March 30), Hong Kong backstamp (May 22)

Extremely Fine and stunning cover to Shanghai, China, with the 3¢ 1851 and strip of 10¢ 1855 paying the 33¢ rate via Southampton. We have offered only eight other covers to Shanghai with the 1851-56 Issue since keeping computerized records, and this is certainly one of the finest. (Image)

Paid Jul. 13" (1857) circular datestamp on yellow cover to Singapore, East Indies, addressed to Captain S. Lyman Norton of the ship Minstrel, in care of Boustead & Co., sender's routing instructions "via Southampton", black "Boston Br. Pkt. 15 Jul." circular datestamp on back--carried on the Cunarder Niagara, departing Boston July 15, 1857, arriving Liverpool July 26--red "28" credit handstamp ties one 10¢ stamp, red London circular datestamp (July 27), manuscript "1" British Colonial credit marking, backflap repaired, cosmetic improvements around edges (latter not mentioned on certificates), Fine, a rare early use to Singapore, the stamps pay the 33¢ rate via Southampton, this is the first 1851-56 Issue cover to Singapore we have offered since keeping computerized records, ex Giamporcaro and Hackmey, with 1989 and 1999 P.F. certificates.

The Norton Correspondence

This sale contains three remarkable covers addressed to Captain S. Lyman Norton as he sailed the ship Minstrel from Boston to the East Indies and Far East in 1857 and 1858. Included are covers with the 1851-56 Issue addressed to Java (lots 246 and 297) and Singapore (lot 270). (Image)
