image [Vermont] Manchester March 23 (Bennington County) manuscript postmark and matching "17" rate on 1802 folded letter addressed to Brentwood N. Hampshire, datelined "Dorset, Feb. 21, 1802" and March 15 (Dorset is in Vermont). The rate of 17 confirms that this postmark is from Vermont and not New Hampshire. This is an early usage as ASCC notes that manuscript town marks for Manchester started in 1799, with a value of $500.00 for the earliest markings.; Light toning in the UL corner of the FL slightly affects the "M" of Manchester and the FL with some typical splitting for this type of paper, Fine and scarce, ex- Henry C. Beck.
