This large Boston "23" debit handstamp is not recorded by Blake. Aachen marked 38 kreuzer (Austrian) as the debit to Austria for the international rate of 30¢. Transit through Switzerland added 3 kr.(A) for a total Austrian debit of 41 kr.(A) which was passed on to the Kingdom of Sardinia. This was equivalent to 26 crazie in Tuscany to which 4 crazie transit was added. Total postage due marked in red pen was 30 crazie.

Jul. 30" cds, New York red "3" credit handstamp crossed out by foreign mail circular grid cancel, updated with red "New York 'Paid 6' Aug. 1" credit exchange cds, carried by Collins Line Atlantic from New York Aug. 1st to Liverpool arriving Aug. 12th, French (8.12) entry cds and Paris (8.12) arrival backstamp, "John Munroe & Co., Paris" oval backstamp and remailed to Geneva with Paris (8.13) cds and black "35cs" due handstamp, Geneva (8.14) arrival backstamp, with original 1857 enclosure, small repair at top left corner of top stamp, otherwise Very Fine and unusual use, ex-Eubanks, with clear 1999 P.F. certificate.

PKT." and "ART-5 / U.S. PKT." depending on British and American packets respectively.

Pkt. Jun 30" cds and "45" cent due handstamp for ¼ - ½ ounce letter via Marseilles (effective Jan. 1857 to Aug 1861), a Very Fine use at the 45¢ rate.

Very interesting letter from Augustine Heard & Co. concerning ship wreck and Second Opium War: "…About 4,000 Packages have been recovered from the wreck of the "Cruiser" and are held by the sailors until some settlement until some settlements are made with the local underwriters of the ship. Some 2000 packages more, report says were carried off by the local Chinese to Whampoa and sold there….The "Grey Feather" has come down the river from Whampoa to complete he loading here, probably with Chow-Chow Cargo…The Chinese traders at Canton, anticipating some hostile proceedings towards foreigners upon the arrival of the new Governor General, who is expected from the north about the 10th, are very anxious to move off what stocks of Teas and other export produce they have remaining on their hands… All the foreign Ambassadors have left Shanghae for the north; and should the Allied Powers carry into effect their reported intentions of stopping the supplies for Pekin serious apprehensions are entertained that the Chinese will take some retaliatory measures at the Treaty Ports…".

Gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, and the town of Auraria was named in 1833. In 1857 a group of Aurarians called the "Russell Boys" traveled to the Pikes Peak region to seek gold, which they discovered in the sands of Cherry Creek in February 1858. This soon gave birth to a town which they named Auraria in honor of their Georgia home. Council Bluffs, Iowa is approximately 540 miles east of Auraria.
