USN/ Comd'g "Iowa" July 3/98" closing signature on a hand written letter in response to correspondence from a woman in Newburgh NY evidently requesting a souvenir from the war and enclosed with the letter was a "button from my white sash - the only button I have given to anyone since the close of the Spanish war.", the letter with central fold and some spindle holes not affecting the signature (one through the "N" of "USN"), Very Fine, the brass button/ pin accompaniesrnCapt. (later Rear Admiral) Robley Evans (1846-1912) served from the American Civil War to the Spanish-American War. From 1907-08 he commanded the Great White Fleet on its worldwide cruise from the Atlantic Ocean through the Straits of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean. Early Sailor's Letter to USA, cover with "Harry S Gregg USN/ USS New Orleans/ Santiago de Cuba" return address, sent unfranked with an ms "Due 2c" and 2c due affixed and tied, Key West Fla Jun 8 98 duplex cancel, backstamped Marshalltown, Ia, envelope roughly opened at right, Fine; Early mails before the opening of the first post office by the Marines at Daiquiri on June 23 were sent via Key WestrnAccompanying letter relates "We sunk a torpedo boat the night of June 2 and had quite a time. We attack Spanish forts tomorrow at daybreak. The admiral sent his compliments to the crew and Schley sent recommendation to Wash. on account of our work June 2." On May 19, 1898, a month after the outbreak of hostilities, a Spanish fleet arrived in Santiago harbor on the southern coast of Cuba. The Spanish fleet was immediately blockaded in harbor by U.S. warships from the U.S. squadrons in the Atlantic, under Rear Admiral William T. Sampson and Commodore Winfield S. Schley. (Image)

1898 Patriotic Cover from Sibonia to USA, flag patriotic with image of Sec of War Alger captioned "Sec Alger Camp Alger Va" in the field of stars, New York Ship Letter Jul 30 98 "Opera Glass" cancel plus circled "Due 2 Cents" handstamp, 2c Due affixed (torn and right half missing) and cancelled on arrival, partially struck 4-line handstamp "Soldier's Letter/.../ 8th Regt Ohio Vols.", backstamped Ashland (Oh) Rec'd, cover roughly opened and slightly reduced at right, also partially open along bottom with torn bottom flap, also opened along top but resealed with some small sealed breaks, still an attractive and rare domestic patriotic; accompanied by letter from the soldier on YMCA letterhead datelined July 14, 1898 (toned, splits along heavy folds, piece of a corner photo mount stuck down on one page) mentioning life in camp (especially the food and cooking), some artillery, illness among the troops, etc.rnSiboney was a very small town with no postal facilities under Spanish administration. As troops advanced on Santiago, the first military station was established, four miles west of Siboney which was closer to Santiago. An outbreak of yellow fever resulted in the stations closing with no mail handled between July 10-20. During the second week, the US Army burnt down all the buildings in town to control the outbreak. Postal service was resumed temporarily at a fever hospital on the outskirts of town. This is one of two covers known sent from this hospital and was written on the same date as the other known use. 1898 Santiago Military Station Cover with Cancel from Captured Spanish Canceller, envelope endorsed "Soldier's letter/ PJ Hearst/ Chap 3rd US Cavy" and addressed to Port Tampa Fla, partial "Due 2" handstamp and pair of 1c Dues affixed and cancelled on arrival, Spanish "Santiago De Cuba/ Ysla De Cuba Jul 27 98" cds, Port Tamp Fla Aug 13 1898 receiver, envelope some light aging and small tone spots, Fine use, the Cuban cancelling device was used for a brief period until US Military Station obliterators arrived. rnThe 3rd US Cavalry, once in Cuba, was assigned to seize the Spanish positions on the high ground around the landward side of the seaport of Santiago de Cuba. The cavalry division, of which the Regiment was a part, was one of three divisions assigned the mission of assaulting these hills. During the battle, one of the division's members would receive the Medal of Honor for his actions. (Image)
