WWII Japanese Internee Mail, Dick Ujiye Correspondence Ontario Canada, June 1942 to March 1943, 17 covers including 6 with original contents, and 5 postcards with typed messages and 3 telegrams, mostly addressed to Mrs. Ujiye in Ontario, Canada, some of the contents are regarding the estate of Mrs. Ujiye's father (including 2 condolence cards), also includes a letter written by Mrs. Ujiye thanking the recipient and her husband and all the Japanese men for "everything you did for my father Minomatsu Onodera who was killed at Lasnell Camp, July 18, 1942", many covers are roughly opened, Fine to Very Fine and rare glimpse into the life of these poor people who suffered greatly during this period, fully imaged online.
Per https://vitacollections.ca/multiculturalontario/480/exhibit/5, "The majority of Ontario internees were men and women without families, who were sent to labour camps. Their work (included) a nursery outside Mississauga, a variety of farms as day labourers, harvesting sugar beets near Glencoe, building roads in Northern Ontario (and) landscaping in public parks. There are few stories of rebellion and resistance by Japanese workers, but here's one: "At one Niagara farm, Dick Ujiye, who had owned a dry cleaning business in Vancouver, was assigned to drive the fertilizer wagon. He decided that he was no farmer and talked with other Japanese Canadians about moving to the city. The conditions of the Japanese deportation from the B.C. coast, however, prohibited such a move. The RCMP sent an officer who spoke Japanese to check up on the Ujiye family because "they claimed that Dick was an agitator." The policeman reported Ujiye to the farm owner and he was fired. - Carmela Patrias, More Menial than Housemaids? Racialized and Gendered Labour in the Fruit and Vegetable Industry of Canada's Niagara Region, 1880–1945" . (Image)
