AUSTRALIAN STATES - SOUTH AUSTRALIA 1862 1s olive yellow "CHANGELING" bearing part of the Colombo wreck cachet - for years this shade was deemed to have been an issued colour however the source of this stamp was
the wreck of the "Colombo" where the mail had lain submerged for 3 months and the salt water had altered the brown stamp ink to this shade, "SAVED FROM THE WRECK OF THE COLOMBO." framed 2-line cachet on a cover front (these covers always damaged)
addressed to London and posted in Adelaide on 27th October 1862 with stamp washed off plus a separate example of the wreck cachet cut from another cover. A very unusual and informative trio (1 stamp, 1 front, 1 cachet piece)(Image 1) |
