EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY THREE EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT 1902 IMPERFORATE ERROR ARE RECORDED.
All of the three known examples of this error -- the only major error found on any of the values of the 1902-03 Issue -- are unused without gum and similarly creased. They are: 1) bottom sheet margin, creases, ex Brody (Shreves Dec. 6, 2002 sale, realized $5,000 hammer), 2) top right corner sheet margin, light creases, ex Chesapeake (Siegel Sale 873, lot 3032, realized $4,750 hammer), and 3) bottom left corner sheet margin, light creases, the example offered here.
With 1985 P.F. certificate (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN OUTSTANDING MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 50-CENT 1902 ISSUE.
The 1902-03 Regular Issue was a great improvement over the Bureau's first efforts in 1894 and 1895. Perforations tend to be cleaner, and centering better, but the large plate layout and perforate method still resulted in a large number of poorly centered stamps. Furthermore, stamps issued in choice condition seldom stayed that way, because the boom in stamp collecting that began with the Roosevelt administration caused hordes of hinge-bearing philatelists to mount stamps over and over again. For this reason, today's collectors have grown accustomed to paying many multiples of Scott value for Extremely Fine stamps in Mint Never-Hinged state. Anyone who has pursued this set can testify that the 50c is rarely encountered in such condition. The 50c 1902 offered here probably ranks among the ten highest-quality examples in existence.
With 2005 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $11,500.00). Only one has graded higher to date (at 95J) and only one other shares this grade (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 1902 ISSUE WITH JUMBO MARGINS
With 2006 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $1,600 as 95, $2,950.00 as 98). Only two hinged examples (and no Mint N.H. copies) have graded higher to date, and only two others share this grade. (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE $2.00 1902 ISSUE.
Most blocks have been broken to feed the demand for singles. Scott Catalogue only gives a $450.00 premium for a block versus four singles. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE LARGEST KNOWN USED MULTIPLE FOR THE $2.00 1902 ISSUE.
An outstanding exhibition piece with incredible centering for such a large block of the $2.00 1902 Issue. Scott Retail as three blocks of four and six singles does not give a true indication or its rarity. (Image)
FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE AND IMPRESSIVE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF THE $5.00 1902 ISSUE.
Ex Cheshire. The Scott value for a block carries a small premium over the $12,000 total for four singles. (Image)
VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SET OF MATCHING ARROW BLOCKS, INCLUDING THREE WITH THE BLUE BALL MARKER DOT, AND ALSO THE EXTREMELY RARE CENTERLINE BLOCK. A MAGNIFICENT EXHIBITION SET.
The bottom arrow block has never been seen by us with the ball marker -- it is only found on the top, right and left arrow blocks. Some arrow blocks do not have the ball markers at all, such as the sets offered in our 1964 and 1971 Rarities sales. According to Johl, the centerline block is particularly rare as only 29 sheets in all were issued imperforate and most were used to make private coils. Johl also notes that not more than ten centerline blocks could possibly have remained intact, and it is likely the actual number to survive is significantly less. (Image)
VERY FINE PAIR OF THE RARE 5-CENT 1908 VERTICAL COIL.
The 5c 1908 Coil stamps, which were stripped by hand, are almost always strongly centered to one side. With 1955 P.F. certificate. Blue dealer's backstamp. (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE PAIR OF THE RARE ONE-CENT 1908 HORIZONTAL COIL.
With 1974 P.F. certificate and older certificate with yeardate cut off (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN ATTRACTIVE PASTE-UP SINGLE OF THE ONE-CENT HORIZONTAL COIL, SCOTT 318. SCARCE WITH SUCH CHOICE CENTERING.
With copy of 2005 P.S.E. certificate for pair. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1908 HORIZONTAL COIL.
Armstrong notes that only 167 examples had been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as of 1980. The frequency with which this coil appears at auction would indicate that it may in fact be rarer, and that Armstrong's census information may contain duplicate records. Issued on July 31, 1908, and intended only to be used by private vending machine companies, Scott 322 is only known with the Die II widened line at lower left.
Blue backstamp from Scott Stamp & Coin Co. With 1994 P.F. certificate for pair. (Image)
