1511 og ImageFRANCE, 1850, 40c Dark Orange with Brownish Gum (7 var; Yvert 5A). Horizontal pair, original gum with the distinctive horizontal dark brown band, small h.r., large balanced margins all around, vibrant color in a distinctive dark shade

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM PAIR OF THE 40-CENTIMES DARK ORANGE WITH THE DARK BROWNISH GUM TRIAL CREATED TO PREVENT REUSE.

At first glance, the gum appears to be severely disturbed and toned. Although, the dark brown band was an intentional trial for the gum to prevent reuse of the stamp. The intention was that the dark band would adhere to paper with far more strength and would damage the stamp upon removal. Due to disappointing tests, this form of gumming was abandoned and the stamps issued as normal.

Signed Thier and A. Brun. With 2020 Roumet certificate. Catalogued as singles. Scott $4,300.00. Yvert €7,600 (Image)
