The Civil War, featuring the 'Ambassador' Collection continued...

Trans-Mississippi Express
Lot Sym. Lot Description
307 c Image10c Blue, Die A (11). Horizontal strip of four, fresh color, full margins to touched at sides, tied by two of three bold strikes of "Jackson Miss. Aug." (1864) circular datestamp on East-to-West 40c Trans-Mississippi Express Rate cover to Waco Texas, manuscript "Via Jackson Miss-- By Express" and "South Bosque" (near Waco), stamps had some previous toned spots expertly removed, minor cover repairs to corners and small sealed tears

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL EAST-TO-WEST TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER.

While this cover has no letter content, it most likely originated from somewhere other than Jackson, given the route directive. Jackson was occupied by Union troops during the Vicksburg Campaign in May-July 1863, but was not permanently held. It became a station on the Trans-Mississippi route in 1864, though very few 40c covers are recorded postmarked in Jackson.

Krieger census no. E30. Ex Brooks, Hill and Hastings. With 2013 P.F. certificate (Image)

308 c Image10c Greenish Blue, Die B (12c). Horizontal strip of three and single, large margins, tied by faint "Lumpkin Ga." circular datestamp on East-to-West 40c Trans-Mississippi Express Rate cover to Natchitoches La. with sender's routing "Via Meridian Miss.", with original enclosure dated Dec. 22, 1863, regarding legal matters but comments "No war news of any interest since the defeat of Bragg at Missionary Ridge", letter reinforced with tape (stained), the cover is missing part of backflap and has slight wear along edges, small lightened stained spot in strip

FINE APPEARING AND VERY RARE TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER -- REPUTED TO BE THE ONLY ONE WITH ITS ORIGINAL LETTER.

According to a notation by A. Earl Weatherly, this is the only 40c Trans-Mississippi Express cover with its original letter, but we cannot verify this claim.

Ex Walske. Illustrated in Shenfield book and listed in Krieger as E11 (page 41). With 2007 P.F. certificate (Image)
