VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE MULTIPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10-CENT DIE A PERFORATED ISSUE. THIS IS MOST LIKELY THE SECOND LARGEST BLOCK EXTANT.

A small quantity of Confederate 10c Engraved stamps (11-12) was perforated using a British De La Rue & Co. perforating machine brought through the blockade, sometime between early 1862 and the spring of 1863. The experiment was quickly abandoned, likely because the time it took to perforate the stamps rendered the idea impractical. The experimental perforated stamps were then distributed to various post offices and used. The largest multiple we record is an irregular block of 40 offered in our Sale 1104 (originally a block of 98).

Ex Robert S. Nelson and Kilbourne. Illustrated in the 1929 Dietz book on p. 263 (as an irregular block of 45, the 10 outer stamps removed). Scott value $13,300.00 as blocks of four and singles (Image)
