Worldwide Stamps and Postal History continued...

Worldwide: China thru Germany
Lot Sym. Lot Description
319 og ImageCHINA, 1915, $2.00 Blue & Black Hall of Classics, Center Inverted (237a; Chan 245a). Large part original gum, h.r., centered to the right and bottom as are several others that came from the left side of one of the sheets, unusually fresh, with brilliant color on pristine white paper

FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE AND POPULAR 1915 $2.00 HALL OF CLASSICS WITH CENTER INVERTED. ONE OF THE "FOUR TREASURES OF THE REPUBLIC."

It is now believed two sheets of 50 stamps were issued with the center inverted. However, only a small fraction of those survive today. Though we are unaware of any published census, estimates in the literature of the number known are usually between 30 and 40.

Pencil note on gum says this was purchased in a 1937 Harmer Rooke sale -- the E. H. Finegan collection. Scott $175,000.00 (Image)

324 og ImageFINLAND, 1868, 10p Red Brown on Lilac, Roulette III, Error of Color (13c; Facit 5v5). Original gum, extraordinarily well-centered, completely intact teeth, deep rich color and strong impression on crisp paper

EXTREMELY FINE. A GEM ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE VERY RARE 1868 10-PENNI ERROR OF COLOR. WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST, IF NOT THE FINEST, ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES IN EXISTENCE.

In the second setting of cliches for the 5-penni plate, a 10-penni cliche (Position 10 in the first setting of the 10-penni plate) was placed in error in Position 31. On January 11, 1868, 1,000 sheets of the 5-penni stamps containing the 10-penni error were delivered to the Postal Administration, all subsequently sent to various post offices. A second printing of 1,000 sheets containing the error was delivered in the second quarter of 1868. The error stamps in this printing were removed and destroyed in 1870.

Ex Faberge (with tiny red owner's handstamp), Rothschild and Gross. With 2006 Gummesson certificate. Scott $8,000.00. Facit SK 70,000 (Image)

325° nh ImageGERMANY, ALLIED MILITARY GOVERNMENT, Complete Unexploded "Specimen" Booklet. VERY FINE. THIS IS ONLY THE SECOND WE HAVE SOLD AND THE THIRD KNOWN TO US.

An article by Joe Schirmer in U.S. Possessions (Volume 3, No. 1, 1980) states that the U.S. Government had only fifteen of these booklets (in the Treasury Department or the Smithsonian), and it is unknown how many may be in private hands. We sold one other in 2005 (for $14,500 plus premium), and we are aware of another that sold at auction in 2004. It could be a very long time before another example comes to the market. (Image)
